Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to deliver the long-awaited first batch of HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF), providing a crucial boost to the military's pilot training program.
According to officials familiar with the development, three HTT-40 (Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40) aircraft are currently ready for handover, with two manufactured in Bengaluru and one at the Nashik facility.
The preparation of these aircraft comes after US-based aerospace firm Honeywell successfully overcame severe supply chain bottlenecks. The company recently delivered the first batch of TPE331-12B turboprop engines to HAL and has committed to maintaining a timely supply schedule moving forward.
Overcoming Supply Challenges
Three years ago, the government approved the procurement of 70 HTT-40 basic trainers for the IAF at a cost of ₹6,838 crore.Under the initial timeline, HAL was expected to deliver 12 trainers to the IAF during the 2025-26 financial year. However, the state-run manufacturer was unable to meet this target entirely due to the unavailability of engines.
To power the indigenous trainer, HAL and Honeywell signed a $100 million contract four years ago covering the supply and co-manufacture of 88 TPE331-12B engines and associated kits.
Under this strategic agreement, Honeywell is tasked with directly delivering 16 engines, while HAL will produce the remaining units domestically through a Transfer of Technology (ToT) arrangement.
Although the first engine was contractually scheduled for delivery in September 2025, global supply chain disruptions significantly delayed the timeline until Honeywell's recent shipment.
Ramping Up Indigenous Production
With the engine supply restored, HAL is positioned to scale up its manufacturing output.Last October, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a dedicated production line for the HTT-40, along with the LCA-Mk1A, at the Nashik division to meet the urgent requirements of the armed forces.
By utilising both the Bengaluru and Nashik facilities, HAL now has the capacity to roll out 20 HTT-40 trainers annually.
The HTT-40 is a modern, tandem-seat turboprop aircraft designed with pilot-friendly features. It boasts a state-of-the-art glass cockpit, zero-zero ejection seats, and a maximum speed of 450 km/h.
Certified for aerobatics and instrument flying, it is engineered to deliver reliable performance in demanding training environments.
Bolstering the IAF Training Pipeline
The induction of the HTT-40 will directly address the IAF's expanding requirement for rookie pilot training.Currently, all Stage-I (ab initio) flying training is conducted on imported Swiss Pilatus PC-7 MkII basic trainers.
After completing Stage-I, pilots are streamed into fighter, transport, or helicopter branches.
Those selected for the fighter stream advance to Stage-II training on the PC-7 MkII and Kiran Mk-1A jet trainers, eventually progressing to Stage-III on the British-origin Hawk advanced jet trainers.
The addition of the HTT-40 will join the existing PC-7 MkII fleet, ensuring that the foundational training of future aviators remains uninterrupted while reducing reliance on foreign-built trainers.
