In what is emerging as one of the longest-distance combat intercepts in the history of ground-based air defence, the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully neutralized a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) airborne surveillance aircraft during the final stages of Operation Sindoor.

The unprecedented engagement was detailed by Sergeant Bhale Singh, an IAF Gallantry Award recipient and the launcher in-charge of an S-400 Triumf battery, during a recent public interview.

The 314-Kilometre Chase​

The encounter began when Indian air defence radars detected a high-value Pakistani Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) platform operating near the border. Initial tracking placed the aircraft between 250 and 275 kilometres away from the Indian S-400 battery.

Recognising the strategic importance of the target, the IAF command authorised the launch of the 40N6—the S-400 system’s most advanced long-range interceptor.

According to Sergeant Singh, the PAF AWACS crew detected the incoming threat shortly after launch.

In a desperate bid to survive, the aircraft executed hard evasive manoeuvres, turning sharply away from the border and accelerating deeper into Pakistani airspace to escape the missile's lethal tracking envelope.

However, the evasive tactics were unsuccessful. The S-400’s onboard engagement data recorders confirmed a successful interception at a staggering distance of 314 kilometres, well inside Pakistani territory.

Identifying the Target​

Data collected during the engagement—specifically the electronic signature recorded by the missile system—indicated that the destroyed aircraft was highly likely a Saab 2000 Erieye Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) platform.

This technical assessment was subsequently corroborated by both human intelligence networks and open-source intelligence, which noted ground reports of a major aircraft crash within Pakistan matching the Erieye's profile shortly after the missile launch.

The Saab 2000 Erieye, manufactured in Sweden, is a cornerstone of the PAF’s airborne surveillance fleet.

Equipped with a prominent dorsal active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, the platform can monitor vast areas of airspace, coordinate fighter squadrons, and detect incoming threats from hundreds of kilometres away.

The 40N6 Interceptor's Capabilities​

This record-setting interception highlights the formidable capabilities of the 40N6 missile.

While standard surface-to-air missiles are generally meant for fighter jets and incoming munitions, the 40N6 was explicitly engineered to eliminate critical support aircraft—such as AWACS, electronic warfare planes, and mid-air refuelling tankers—before they can safely retreat.

Capable of reaching speeds exceeding Mach 14 and possessing a maximum operational range of 400 kilometres, the 40N6 features a unique flight profile. It climbs to extreme altitudes before diving toward its target.

In its terminal phase, the missile uses its own active radar seeker to lock onto the target, allowing it to destroy aircraft even if they attempt to hide by dropping below the curvature of the earth and out of the ground radar's line of sight.

The destruction of a primary airborne early warning asset represents a massive strategic blow in any modern conflict.

Such aircraft are vital force multipliers; neutralizing them effectively blinds an adversary, severely degrading their situational awareness and shattering their ability to coordinate complex air operations over the battlefield.
