The Indian Air Force's (IAF) Tejas Mk1A Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) has received a significant upgrade to its electronic warfare capabilities with the integration of the advanced Scorpius-SPJ (Self-Protection Jammer) ELL-8222SB.

This sophisticated Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) pod, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries' subsidiary ELTA Systems, was recently spotted in images of the Tejas Mk1A, confirming its successful integration.

The Scorpius-SPJ represents a major leap forward in airborne self-protection technology. Employing cutting-edge Staring Multibeam AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) technology, the system can simultaneously generate hundreds of highly concentrated beams in all directions. This allows the Tejas Mk1A to detect, track, and jam multiple air-to-air and surface-to-air threats at once, providing an unprecedented level of protection in contested airspace.

This new jammer builds upon the proven ELL-8222 system, which has been deployed on various combat aircraft globally. However, the Scorpius-SPJ incorporates significant enhancements, including increased range, power, and sensitivity, making it even more effective against modern threats.

If that pod is indeed the el 8222 sb then nothing can touch the LCA, Thats a huge sigh of relief. Its the next gen of AESA jamming pods that are software controllable , ie if a new wave form is detected it is immediately it is stored and in the pod by DRFM . The data can be down loaded and countermeasure software can be immediately done and reprogrammed. by a PC. Israelis are masters in the EW game.

The old el -8222 jammer jammed the daylights of the american F-15 eagles way back in COPE INDIA exercises in 2004 and the MIG 21 that carried it surprised the F-15 eagle to their utter disbelief. This drubbing in air combat was again repeated in the following cope india exercise. All thanks to the Israeli jammer. Its a real force multiplier. Usually 1 fighter carries a ew pod in battle . Fighter always fly in a pair, if one does not have an SPJ. Both are protected by 1 jammer when they are together. In Balakot Abinandan broke away form his buddy who carried the ew pod to engage the F-16 thus making himself vulnerable to the Amraan, other wise the jammer would have easily deflected the amaramm fired at abinandans Mig 21.

The F-16 could not do any thing to the other SU--30mki which jammed all the ARAAM fired at them. courtesy the EL_8222...The pod not only jams the seeker of the amraam but also confuses the f-16 radar that tries to lock on and give guidance signals to the Amraams. The amraam is an old missile by now and all decent airforces can easily jam it. The russian R-77 with the IAF is also easily jammed in the same way. western powers had already got hold of the secrets of the R-77 as it was widely exported to some tin pot countries . Reports suggests that the IAF were not very happy with the performance of the R-77 compared to the Amaraam.
