IAF Prefers Limited Import of 5th-Gen Fighters Over Local Production to Bridge Stealth Gap Until Domestic AMCA Matures

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is refining its strategy to acquire a fifth-generation stealth fighter, opting for a restricted direct purchase rather than establishing a massive domestic manufacturing line.

While international partners, particularly Russia, have offered extensive technology transfers to build stealth aircraft like the Sukhoi Su-57 within India, senior defence officials indicate that local assembly is not currently a practical priority for the service.

Strategic Bridge Over Industrial Expansion

The IAF has identified a specific requirement for approximately 40 to 60 aircraft to serve as a temporary "bridge" until the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is ready for deployment.

Experts within the service argue that this relatively small fleet size does not justify the immense capital investment needed to create a local production ecosystem.

Setting up the necessary infrastructure—including specialized tooling, stealth coating facilities, and certification frameworks—requires long-term orders that far exceed a stopgap requirement. Consequently, the IAF is leaning toward a direct import to save both time and financial resources.

The Timeline Challenge

Timing remains the most critical factor in this decision. Even if a procurement contract were finalized immediately, the delivery and integration of a foreign stealth platform would likely only begin in the early 2030s.

Current projections suggest that by the time the final imported jets arrive, India’s own AMCA should already be entering its production phase.

This creates a narrow operational window of roughly six to seven years where the imported jet would be the primary stealth asset.

Over-investing in the local production of a foreign platform during this brief overlap could inadvertently drain funding and industrial focus away from the AMCA, which is intended to be the backbone of India’s future air defence.

Balancing Capability and Cost

From a structural perspective, the IAF views this potential purchase as a "capability hedge."

The primary goal is to maintain a technological edge and ensure pilots are trained in stealth-era tactics while domestic programmes transition from blueprints to the runway.

Maintaining a fifth-generation fleet is uniquely demanding, requiring specialized materials and advanced avionics support.

IAF planners believe that limited resources are better spent on ensuring the success of the AMCA, which will be a sovereign platform.

By keeping the interim acquisition lean, the Air Force aims to preserve the "investment headroom" necessary for the AMCA to underpin India's air power for the coming decades.

The Stealth Landscape in 2026

Recent open-source reports from early 2026 indicate that India is currently evaluating the Su-57M1E, an upgraded "final form" of the Russian Felon, which features improved stealth nozzles and "supercruise" engines.

This interest has intensified following reports that regional adversaries are rapidly expanding their own stealth fleets, such as the Chinese J-20 and the newly revealed J-35A.

Meanwhile, the AMCA project reached a major milestone in late 2025, with the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) further streamlining the production model to include more private sector participation. The first prototype rollout is currently anticipated for 2028, with a maiden flight targeted for 2029.

F35 will be chewed up by SU57. Western jets anc equipment is all propaganda. See how the F35 and Rafales keep away from Ukraine conflict. Even Iran under decades of sanctions have missiles that have struck all the US bases in thd ME and Israel's multilayered air defence has been found to be flimsy. Su57 is the Best 5 Gen in the world. Jai Hind.

AHH. That explains why Russia had no air dominance in Ukraine despite Ukraine having no manned air force from day one

Just to make things simple. Forget about the politics. The F35 is not reliable

Make that 90% for Rafales. IAF's own statement.

One other point. There is no such thing as stealth. The correct term is low observable. That also is designed for a particular frequency range, usually X band. The moment your fancy invisible to god fighter is painted by a say L band or VHF / UHF band radar, the emperor is without clothes just like everyone else.

THe problem the defenders of earlier decades faced was that these longer wavelength radars did not have the signal processing capacity to generate returns crisp enough to be tracked. Even a milliradian error at a range of 100 kms is an enormous miss. That is not so now with modern digital processing and humongous computing power. Let me give you another pointer. Study the discussion about various sixth gen options. Talk on capabilities mention ultra long range, very high speed supercruise, lots of weapons, very long range weapons, enormous computing power, network distribution etc. Do you ever come across anyone mentioning iber stealth that even god cant see?? No you dont. Because that has reached the end game already.

Here are a couple of more issues with colloquially called stealth. These uber rich babies fall sick quickly unless they are in climate controlled hangars. Then making them well again is very very expensive. The RAM coatings are fragile and requires frequent re-application, nearly as frequently as beautiful ladies need to visit the powder room. At home base that is okay but can one find such facilities everywhere during deployment for war?? Other maintenance requires enormous infrastructure. Take the case of the Royal Navy F-35 stranded in India for almost a month after a hydraulic failure.

In aerial warfare, what one needs are three things : good electronics, long range weapons, and good engines to give you lots of speed to either close in quickly to launch or run like hell if someone is after you.

The F-35 is miserable in that last attribute. In war against a peer level force one must assume that you would seen at a fair distance. In such a case your only defence is your electronics and the range of your own weapons and lastly your speed.

The Su-57 does lack in all round RCS but is quite competitive in the frontal side. What is has going for it though is really long range weapons and blistering speed. Yes its electronics are probanly a notch lower than the F-35. But then these Indians they have ways of getting around it, just as they did with the Su-30.

Ukraine has an AF even on date. Yes they have lesser numbers but they do have. So please dont mis-represent facts. Second we do not see reports of Su-57 being used. It does not in any way mean they have not been used. My read is they have been used but not in a large scale. Probably because of limited numbers in the inventory, being still developed. Remember, the designated engine is yet to be fully integrated.

Buying the F35 means becoming a US bitch forever. This might be fine for a Gujarati like Modi but a Punjabi Sikh like myself, it's called selling out you country.

Punjab’s military participation rate is one of the highest in India, while Gujarat’s is among the lowest, both in per‑capita and absolute terms. The difference is structural, cultural, and historical.

It's all about money which is the most important thing for a Gujarati , not standing up for India and willing to die for the country.

This explains everything Modi has done since 2014.
Thats a stupid bigoted comment. When there are plenty of BIF, here you are peddling more. SMH

Lobby for business. I had a friend who worked for a multi billion dollar company, he wanted setup a software division in the Punjab. Modi and his supporters said it would be better for him to invest in Gujarat. They were shocked and actually afraid for their safety. Unfortunately, this is modern day India.
Lololol....so Modi talked to your friend and told him not to invest in Punjab!!! This is the most hilarious comment I have read on defence.in. 😂😂😂
