The Indian Air Force's Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets are set for a major upgrade, focusing on enhancing offensive and defensive capabilities.

The first phase will include advanced avionics, radars, and an Electronic Warfare System.

The second phase will focus on flight control systems, ensuring precise maneuverability and enhanced handling.

The project aims to boost India's domestic aerospace industry, reduce dependence on external sources, and enhance national security by controlling critical technologies.

As if they are already upgraded, who is upgrading?, HAL, it will easily take 10-15years, guaranteed job security for HAL employees.

Misleading title but the article same old rehash of info. Expect the upgrade to happen after 2030 meanwhile we get to read these articles all over again.

the second phase is flight control systems??

does the writer know what is FCS? its the fly by wire stuff. you cannot touch that as it is a complex software, tested and proved by russia. They have not given us the codes, nobody will. you cannot decipher any thing as it is written in russian standards with unknown programing language and compiled.

Just like some country trying to modify the FCS of the LCA!! when sold to them ...cmon.
Russian gave us a lot of tech during the su 30 contract as they wee hard up for money. They let us make the mission computer called project "vetrivel" ie spear of lord muruga in tamil. And a lot of other things . we were able to put a Israeli stuff ,french INS gps navigation system as well and many others. HUD, displays, ew etc.

They also gave us al-31 engine tech to a certain level before any country nearly 25 years back. we have become quite experienced in making the al-31 engine and all its parts. we rejected the al-41 engine though more modern as it would be prohibitively expensive today and the doubt wether russiawill part with the same level of tech to us at a mind boggling cost. IAF was wise. Some components have to be still got from russia as per the contract . all in all because the contract stipulates that a lot of raw materials like titanium have to be bought from russia the cost of making a su-30mki is in india more than 2 times what it takes to buy a su-30 from russia.

No doubt at all about the need for such AESA and IRST radars, EW, SPJ, RWR, avionics and displays upgrades, specifically after what India went through during Balakot operations.

Every single one of the upgrade will be very much needed and will make this proposed Super Sukhoi very formidable fighter when equipped with Astra Mk I and Mk II.

Pulling in the private companies is icing on cake and dry run for more systematic private companies partnerships.

But the second phase is very important as it will integrate all these subsystems and fine tune flight control laws (mathematics) to meet the new configuration of masses and C.G.s.
Only Russia can do it and it will be herculean effort to get them cede them to India.

Upgrades will give few more decades of life to these frontline fighters.

Way to go!!!

The entire Sukhoi 30 jets need a complete overhaul in everything from radars, avionics, fly by wire, IRST, EO/IR, laser designator, EW, ESM, RWR etc but it has to be done indigenously. At the same time they should start manufacturing all of the necessary equipment and technology that we need so it becomes easier and quicker to install. Overhauling the entire jets will take a long time time so installing all of the equipment will take at least 10+ years so we will need to work on several of those jets at the same time.
