India Demands Indigenous GaN Radar Integration for Potential Su-57E Acquisition, Citing Russian GaAs-Based AESA Radar Lagging Behind

A significant precondition has emerged in the ongoing defence negotiations between India and Russia, potentially shaping the future of the Indian Air Force's fleet.

India has made it clear that any potential procurement of Russia's fifth-generation Su-57E fighter jet will depend on the integration of India's own indigenously developed radar and sensor systems, a move that has reportedly caused concern among Russian defence officials.

The core of the issue lies in the aircraft's avionics, specifically its Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar. The Russian-offered Su-57E comes equipped with the N036 Byelka AESA system, which is based on Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) technology.

However, Indian defence experts contend that this technology is no longer at the cutting edge and falls short of the advanced capabilities of their domestic alternative.

In a major push for its national self-reliance policy, "Aatmanirbhar Bharat," India is advancing with its own Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based AESA radars. Developed by the DRDO, these next-generation systems are considered technologically superior.

GaN technology offers greater power efficiency, enhanced detection range, and superior resistance to electronic jamming compared to GaAs systems.

Prime examples of this domestic capability include the DRDO's 'Uttam' radar, which is already operational on Tejas fighter prototypes, and the more powerful 'Virupaksha' radar being developed for the Su-30MKI fleet upgrade.

This insistence on homegrown technology is a central pillar of India's future aviation strategy. The nation's own fifth-generation fighter program, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), and the enhanced 4.5-generation Tejas Mk2 are both slated to be equipped with these advanced GaN-based radars.

By demanding the same for the Su-57E, New Delhi is signalling a clear strategic shift towards standardising its most critical military technologies and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.

From Moscow's perspective, the demand is seen as a challenge to the design integrity of the Su-57E and Russia's prestige as a leader in aerospace technology.

Russian officials had reportedly hoped that a generous package—including technology transfer, joint production at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) facilities, access to source codes, and even payment in Indian rupees—would be sufficient to secure the deal.

The negotiations are taking place against the backdrop of India's larger effort to modernise its air force through the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) program, a tender valued at approximately $20 billion to acquire 114 new jets.

In this competitive field, the Su-57E is vying with Western aircraft like France's Rafale and the American F-35. India's firm stance on its indigenous radar could significantly influence the outcome, potentially favouring competitors if Russia does not agree to the customisation.

Defence analysts interpret India's position as a reflection of its growing confidence as a developer and producer of high-end defence technology. With the first flight of the AMCA projected around 2029 and the Tejas Mk2 program advancing, India is negotiating from a position of increased strength.

The outcome of this radar dispute is now seen as a critical test for the future of the long-standing India-Russia defence relationship, demonstrating whether traditional partnerships can adapt to the new realities of technological sovereignty.

Nothing wrong on this stand and the integration of GaN radar will have all the fleet on the same platform giving edge to IAF. SU57 will be of the highest quality in the fleet if procured and if this itself will miss the highest order radar will be of waste. Russia should have no issues for this as this is totally of our IAF interest and upliftment.

Absolutely it's evident that Indias confidence in its tech is strong development in aerodefence. Which significantly increases our postion in global arena we must stand on this poposals.as russia has been long and time tested partner nothing hamper strategically russias interest in any domain..but we should consider payment options flexibility which will balance trade and currency depreciation

Recent news updates for the 5th gen fighter from Def Sec Singh is that India is concentrating on AMCA and has no formal discussions for F35 or SU57 done yet. Since the neighbors are ready with adopting 5th gen fighters and India not thinking still on this looks to be a very bold move. Has the success of Op Sindoor gone into heads of not thinking of the danger of pakistan having the 5th gen jet the time will decide. Are we not going to learn from past mistakes, Tejas was a dream that should have been reality by now still we are dreaming only. We have set dream of having AMCA in 8 years I feel this will be impossible. Decision of not increasing the fleet not thinking of the 5th gen available SU57 option with hard earned and fast track deal to me looks a bit arrogant behavior. The time will only be a proper judge to decide on the stupidity or the complacency and may be rating the enemy less.

Has indigenious GaN based AESA radar developed tested and proven and certified for airworthiness.
If not then let Russian radar continue till indigenious radar is ready for replacement.
Otherwise you will be neither there nor hear.
We have immediate requirement of combat worthey 5thgeneration fighter.

India cannot "demand" anything. You have no time. War is on your door. Do you not see? If you're getting a plane with GaAs with software permission, then pull the unwanted GaAs out of the planes and use it on other things...it's not like you have a surplus of ANYthing. Have you not seen your political environment? The entire british reich is against you (though they will not make it obvious). All your neighbors are against you (China, Pakistan, Banladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal) NOT one even polite to you. You sleep to extinction at this rate.

The people that France and the West are kicking around like footballs are taking a stance against the help that Russia is willing to offer, why not tell that to France and the US and get kicked out.? Have they being able to create a working engine their entire life.?

Get extinct and leave having opinions to others. Indian defence is more solid rn than every western country other than usa, which doesnt really matter. There is no need to scramble for a 5th gen unless youre a terr* aggressor like the 🇺🇸 or 🇵🇰 and we dont have a habit of hoarding junk like the usa either. Stick to begging for subsidies please 🙏🏾

Indian government and IAF should negotiate to our terms and conditions in the 114 MRFA procurement. When we are giving business to countries which are competing to sell their products its only natural to make request to our needs and requirements. Indian Air Force is going through difficult negotiations Dassault to install Indian missile systems in Rafael fighters. But I am curious to know how effective is stealth in Su 57, hard point to cater for latest technology weapons system and other WF suites. It doesn't make sense to buy a 5th gen fighter just bcoz our adversaries are equipped with one. The huge amount of money invested in the procurement of Su57 must equate the purpose and worthy of a credible product information purchase. Of course I am not suggesting that IAF should go for F35 which I think it is not a good idea due several restrictions and subject to US making imposing it's control over India as a tool.

The major issue is not whether India has the superior technology or not. It is the issue that Russia will have to accede to this and the logistics behind the admittance. One is that they will accede that they don't have the superior technology and that they are behind on this aspect. With that said they will have to take the necessary research costs and program resource to build this Secondly admittance would erode the prestige and admit it's weakness against it's competitors thus eroding competitive advantages.
India knows what it needs and are looking for a quick fix or temporary solution to mitigate a potentially immediate disastrous disadvantage while looking forward to a long term solution. Whether Russia adheres to what India need is still upto them whether they value their working relationship with India or else India can look for other supplier who can work within their system or close to their system.

Can anybody explain why Japan offer is not being considered
Yes👍 100% agree and then its sorted out completely. Tejas MK2 to AMCA Mark1 and Mark2 and also 6th Gen Fighter jet in one mastersroke with China, PAK and USA all got shocked in one shot. This will be the historic for IAF and Bharat both. जय हिंद🇮🇳🚀🚀🚀
