India Outpaces Pakistan in Highway Landing Game

India Outpaces Pakistan in Highway Landing Game

Remember when highways were just for cars? Well, not anymore! The Indian Air Force (IAF) is turning some of those stretches of asphalt into backup runways. It's a bold move, and one where India leaving rival Pakistan in the dust.

Pakistan actually kicked off this whole "highway as runway" idea back in 2000. Smart thinking, really – if the enemy targets your airbases, you need some place else to land your jets in a pinch. But India really taken the idea and run with it. They've got five emergency highway strips ready to go, and more are on the way!

What's super impressive is the types of planes they're landing on these roads. We're talking Mirage 2000s, Su-30s, Jaguars…even big transport planes like the C-130! Pakistan done it with a few aircraft of their own, but India's got the bragging rights here.

Now, there might be a reason Pakistan hasn't been so showy. Some of their jets – those Mirages and F-7s – are trickier to land. They've got "delta wings" that mean they come in for touchdown pretty fast. India's got some technical advantages too, like air intakes in different spots that make rougher landings a bit less risky.

Why Does This Matter?

Think of it like a game of chess, but with way higher stakes. India got more options. Need to scramble fighters quickly? Surprise the enemy with a takeoff from an unexpected location? They can do that. Their diverse fleet and all those highway strips give them an edge Pakistan just doesn't have right now.

Of course, let's hope these emergency runways stay just that – for emergencies only. But if things ever do get tense, India's smart investment in these double-duty highways could pay off big time.

Since the article does mention delta wings, it would be wise to note that the Tejas, Mirage 2000, and Rafale all have delta wings. Associated implications may be deliberated upon further by planners.

I believe IAF has extensively tested MKI for highway landings considering the sheer number of them present in the fleet as compared to dozens of other jets.
I don't know whether Delta wings affects any deliberations on part of the IAF,but I believe sheer air speed and wingspan do play a part.

honestly, India should stop comparing itself to Pakistan............India is in a different league now......

despite having 10 times lower budget PAF has humiliated us in balakot...

IAF=incompetent air force

Was your comment got anything to do with the topic ? And it what way was India humiliated ? IAF does not have F16 and the MiG 21 which was shot down was an antique which still managed to shoot down a F16 before going down .
Instead of posting useless comments about our military establishment try to make yourself useful.

No proo of F16 shooting

We shot our own Heli killing 7

We did not had SDR, p@k jammed out communication
So Abhinandan entered p@k territory

IAF made us a laughing stock around the world.

It's not boasting. It's about adopting the right practice. And by the way Sweden does not have enough land to have more airbase .
Sweden is a very large country small population Plenty of land.
Motorways were used in case Russia deatroyed it's airbases.
Which in the1950's would not have been difficult.
I should have clarified - why are we boasting comparing us to Pakistan.

I had asked you for a proof to prove Apache deal was a scam. You couldn't furnish one . And now this Balakot incident. Did you witness the whole incident? It's you who is making a laughing stock out of yourself by mindlessly blaming our defence establishment without any rhyme or reason. So it's high time for you do some introspection and post only those which is factually correct.
If you require proof of IAF Mig 21 downing PAF F16 approach North Block. They will oblige you.

There is no comparison. India is replicating the good practice. What's wrong in that ?
