MoD Invites Domestic Bids to Integrate Next-Gen Missiles and Helmet-Mounted Display into IAF's 74 Jaguar Fleet


In a significant move to bolster the aerial combat signatures of its strike transition fleet, the Indian Ministry of Defence has officially launched a domestic tender to upgrade 74 Jaguar fighter aircraft.

The Request for Proposal (RFP), issued by Air Headquarters on February 27, 2026, seeks to integrate advanced weaponry and pilot interface systems into the ageing but potent "Shamshir" platforms.

Strategic Enhancements for Close Combat​

The core of this modernization effort involves a comprehensive overhaul of the aircraft's wiring architecture.

This technical shift is designed to replace the legacy "Magic" air-to-air missile systems with the Next Generation Close Combat Missile (NGCCM).

To complement this new firepower, the upgrade includes the integration of a Helmet Mounted Display System (HMDS).

This technology allows pilots to cue weapons and view critical flight data directly on their visor, drastically improving situational awareness and "off-boresight" targeting capabilities during high-speed engagements.

Fleet Scope and Implementation​

The project covers a total of 74 airframes, divided between two specific modernized variants:
  • 24 Jaguar DARIN-II aircraft.
  • 50 Jaguar DARIN-III aircraft (the most advanced avionics standard currently in service).
The modification work is slated to occur across several strategic Indian Air Force (IAF) stations, including Ambala, Jamnagar, Bhuj, Suratgarh, and Gorakhpur.

Specialized facilities at the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bengaluru will also play a pivotal role in the technical execution and certification.

Strengthening the Domestic Defence Ecosystem​

In line with national "Aatmanirbharta" (self-reliance) goals, the Ministry has restricted the bid to Indian defence firms. Prospective contractors must possess:
  • Prior experience with airborne modifications certified by the Regional Centre for Military Airworthiness (RCMA).
  • AS9100 aerospace quality certification.
  • Expertise in managing Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility (EMI/EMC) standards.
The selected partner will be tasked with completing the entire fleet upgrade within a three-year window.

According to the RFP, each individual aircraft modification must be finalized within 45 days, including rigorous functional testing of the new missile and display interfaces.

Background: The Jaguar’s Evolving Role​

Originally inducted in the late 1970s as a deep-penetration strike aircraft, the SEPECAT Jaguar has remained a cornerstone of the IAF due to its unique low-level flying capabilities.

While the IAF is gradually moving toward newer platforms like the Rafale and the indigenous Tejas Mk1A, the Jaguar fleet is being maintained through successive DARIN (Display Attack Ranging Inertial Navigation) upgrades to ensure it remains mission-capable through the end of the decade.

The integration of the NGCCM—widely believed to be the MBDA ASRAAM (Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile), which India has previously selected for this fleet—ensures that these strike jets can defend themselves against modern aerial threats while heading to their primary ground targets.
