The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) is taking significant steps to bolster the Indian Army's anti-tank capabilities. A Request for Information (RFI) has been issued for the procurement of over 20,000 new-generation anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), along with 1,500 launchers and simulators.

This move aims to equip the army with advanced weaponry to effectively neutralize enemy tanks and armored vehicles in diverse terrains and challenging conditions.

The procurement falls under the "Buy (Indian-IDDM)" category, emphasizing the government's commitment to indigenous defense production. This category mandates that at least 60% of the content be sourced domestically, ensuring that a minimum of 50% of the total contract value remains within India.

The RFI outlines stringent requirements for the new ATGMs. They must be capable of operating in a wide range of environments, including plains, deserts, high-altitude areas up to 5,500 meters, coastal regions, and islands. This ensures their effectiveness across India's varied terrain, particularly along the western border with Pakistan and the northern border with China.

Operational capability in both day and night, and in challenging weather conditions such as rain, fog, humidity, and dust, is crucial. The missiles must also withstand extreme temperatures ranging from -45°C to 45°C, ensuring their functionality in diverse operational scenarios.

The ATGMs are expected to be highly versatile, capable of targeting a variety of threats, including enemy tanks, armored personnel carriers, low-flying helicopters, concrete structures, and other weapon platforms.

The MoD is also prioritizing a modular design that allows for future upgrades without significant structural changes, ensuring the longevity and adaptability of these systems.

The Indian Army currently relies on a mix of indigenously developed and foreign-sourced ATGMs, including the Milan, Konkur, and Nag missiles. The addition of these new-generation ATGMs will significantly enhance its firepower and operational flexibility.
