The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is making significant strides in its pursuit of developing the PFX fighter program, which is now envisioned as a single-engine, 4.5-generation aircraft.

The design appears to be derived from the existing JF-17 fighter, incorporating key upgrades such as reduced radar cross-section (RCS) features for enhanced stealth, an Infrared Search and Track (IRST) system for improved situational awareness, and an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar for superior target detection and tracking. These advancements aim to significantly enhance the platform's survivability and combat effectiveness.

While initial reports suggested that the PFX would be a twin-engine platform, recent updates indicate a shift in focus towards a highly localized, single-engine design.

This change reflects Pakistan's ambition to establish a foundation for independent defence manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign technology, particularly from China. The twin-engine concept may be revisited after 2035 with the development of a 5th-generation fighter.

The PAF's long-term plans include leveraging China's J-35A stealth fighter, which is expected to be procured for evaluation and technology transfer purposes. The J-35A is seen as a benchmark for integrating advanced features into future PAF designs.

By combining insights gained from this platform with localized developments, Pakistan aims to gradually progress towards a more sophisticated twin-engine, 5th-generation aircraft in the coming decades.

However, the PFX program faces significant hurdles. Developing indigenous technologies such as the IRST, AESA radar, and stealth materials requires substantial investment and expertise.

With limited industrial experience in producing such advanced systems, Pakistan will need to commit significant resources and potentially seek collaboration with international partners to achieve its ambitious goals.

Despite these challenges, the PFX program represents a significant step in Pakistan's efforts to modernize its air force and enhance its indigenous defence capabilities.
