Pune: India's defence sector is set for a significant boost as DRDO chairman Samir Kamat announced on Saturday that the organization's production value is expected to double within the next five years.

This growth is attributed to the increasing adoption of DRDO-developed systems by the Indian armed forces and a surge in international interest, particularly for Brahmos missiles, ATAGS, and Pinaka rocket launchers.

Speaking at the convocation ceremony of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Kamat highlighted the impact of India's focus on self-reliance in the defence sector.

He noted that several DRDO systems, including Brahmos missiles, radars, sonars, ATAGS, and Pinaka, have garnered interest not only from Southeast Asian countries but also from European nations.

Kamat also provided updates on various DRDO projects. He mentioned the successful development of tactical missiles and the upcoming induction of a man-portable anti-tank guided missile and a light tank.

Furthermore, he revealed that the Naval Materials Research Laboratory has developed an air-independent propulsion system, which will enhance the underwater endurance of Indian Navy's conventional submarines.

Emphasizing the DRDO's commitment to innovation, Kamat said they are actively working to adopt disruptive defence technologies emerging from recent conflicts like the Israel-Hamas war and the Russia-Ukraine war.

He also highlighted the establishment of 15 academic institutes of excellence for high-technology projects and the collaboration with private industries, including funding of up to Rs 50 crore for indigenous research and development.
