In a significant step towards bolstering India's defence capabilities and promoting self-reliance, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) today formally signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the procurement of 240 AL-31FP aero engines, valued at over Rs 26,000 crore.
The agreement was finalized in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari.
These engines, destined for the Indian Air Force's Su-30MKI fleet, will be manufactured by HAL's Koraput Division. With a planned production rate of 30 engines per year, the entire order is expected to be fulfilled over the next eight years. This move is crucial for maintaining the operational readiness of the Su-30MKI, a cornerstone of India's air defense strategy.
HAL intends to leverage India's growing defense manufacturing ecosystem during production, involving MSMEs and both public and private sector industries.
By the conclusion of the delivery program, HAL aims to increase the indigenous content of these engines to an impressive 63%, with an average of over 54% throughout the project. This will also contribute to greater self-reliance in the repair and overhaul of these critical aero engines.
