In a significant boost to India's defence capabilities, French aviation giant Dassault Aviation is set to establish a manufacturing base in India. This move is expected to bolster the Indian Air Force's (IAF) fleet with the latest Rafale fighter jets, fulfilling a long-standing requirement for approximately 100 twin-engine multi-role fighters.

The company has already initiated the process of acquiring land near Jewar International Airport for a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility. Initially catering to the existing Mirage 2000 and Rafale fleets, this facility is projected to evolve into a full-fledged manufacturing hub for Rafale fighters under the "Make in India" initiative.

Furthermore, engine manufacturer Safran SA is concurrently setting up an MRO facility in Hyderabad to service Rafale engines. Safran has also signaled its readiness to manufacture M-88 engines in India, further solidifying the country's aerospace capabilities.

This strategic partnership comes amidst heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly with China's aggressive military expansion. By bolstering the IAF's fleet with advanced Rafale fighters, India aims to maintain a robust defence posture.

The collaboration extends beyond fighter jets, with Safran exploring a joint venture with an Indian company to manufacture engines for Indian Multi-Role Helicopters (IMRH), ensuring a self-reliant supply chain for critical components.

This development is a win-win for both nations. Dassault, with a substantial order backlog, can leverage India's manufacturing prowess, while India gains access to cutting-edge technology and strengthens its defence industrial base.
