Germany Approves MP5 Sales to India, Easing Long-Standing Restrictions

In a significant policy shift, Germany has lifted long-standing restrictions on the sale of small arms to India. The decision, made under the new German government, opens the door for the Indian military, paramilitary forces, and state police to buy advanced German weapons, including the iconic MP5 submachine gun.

For over a decade, Germany had strict rules preventing the sale of small arms to nations outside NATO and its close allies. India, along with other countries, was affected by these restrictions.

MP5s and Beyond

The change is particularly crucial for India's National Security Guard (NSG), known for its anti-terrorism operations. The NSG already uses the Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun and now can easily get spare parts and accessories – something not possible before. The decision paves the way for other forces to potentially acquire these sought-after weapons.

Strengthening Ties

The easing of arms restrictions comes alongside a broader effort by Germany to deepen its relationship with India. Cooperation in areas like naval security, space, and military technology are all on the table.

This summer, German fighter jets and aircraft will even participate in an Indian Air Force exercise, further signifying the growing partnership.

Looking Ahead

India now has more options when it comes to procuring advanced small arms. While the news is a boon for German arms manufacturers, it also reflects the changing dynamic between the two countries as strategic interests continue to align.

This will good news for Special forces of both armed forces and state police ones.

HK weapons are impressive but on pricier side. Personally, I think HK417 is far better than Sig Sauer 716 that India mass adopted. Other than few drawbacks like, lower rate of fire, lower magazine capacity, absence of folding buttstock, and it's cost.... Wish to see comparison between these 2 by weapons experts.

India's procurement of small arms can't be dependent on whims and fancies of German government. We should insist on "Make in India" , if H & K is willing to setup manufacturing unit in India, only further orders must be given.

Sigs have hardly been mass adopted. only some 72k rifles. the true mass adoption happened for all the AK clones followed by the Tar21

OFB used to manufacture the MP5 under the name Anamika. Just imagine so many police forces operating MP5s without spare support.

In my opinion, a shift to the ASMI will be much better move especially for the police forces

I think, it is more than 72k nos.

Tar will be used only by select parts of armed forces. Bullpups are not convenient as traditional ones. I think that's why France and China ditched their respective bullpup rifle design as standard one.

I hope that Indian-Govt & Military will consider to adopt HK-416 & MP-7 for Indian Special Forces under Make-in-India program.

Or

OFB can develop a more modular version of JVPC.

Germany remains under constant influence of Leftist-Islamic lobby, majorly controlled by Chinese money…. They give Human rights excuse to ban India but on the other hand they sell weapons to Pakistan!!!!🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ in my opinion india should not Purchage any weapon from Germany as they are not reliable…..

India wants to call itself a major power yet can't manufacture it's own small arms.

Just do it. India has the manpower to do it. Plus it will bring more knowledge and know how to Indian minds. Jobs will also be created.

India has the potential to excel in everything. More than 65% of population is under the age of 35 and everyone has aspirations for excelling in one field or the other.

India has the potential to have the expertise in almost all fields of mankind. This should not be wasted.
Indians should not be only restricted to IT support and call centers.

strange that even small arms are issue in India, why keep buying like a collection in musuem.

We will import from outside but we will never induct what is developed inhouse.

Licensed? That Pakis also manufactured HK MP5 and others... Damn! India should have cloned it with jugaad. Humour is that India can make Nukes and Space rockets but failed so much in making desirable assault rifles due to collective nonsense.
