The historic ₹21,935 crore ($2.6 billion) Airbus-Tata C-295 initiative is fundamentally reshaping India’s aviation sector.

Originally intended to replace the Indian Air Force's (IAF) ageing HS-748 Avro fleet, the project is transitioning the nation from a supplier of basic components into a hub for comprehensive aircraft production.

While the immediate objective is to deliver 40 locally assembled military transport planes out of a total order of 56, the broader ambition is to forge a domestic aerospace supply chain prepared for future defence and commercial demands.

This ambition reached a defining moment on June 10, 2026, when the first C-295 entirely assembled in India successfully completed its maiden test flight.

This landmark event proved that domestic manufacturers have the capability to meet the rigorous global certification standards necessary for modern military aviation.

Building a Tiered Domestic Ecosystem​

The physical aircraft is just the visible peak of this industrial achievement. Departing from older, traditional licensed-manufacturing models, the initiative actively cultivates a multi-layered local supply base.

Over 13,000 specific raw material parts and nearly 4,600 sub-assemblies are now produced locally, providing unprecedented entry points for domestic businesses across the aerospace supply chain.

At the heart of this network are 37 major public and private sector suppliers, supported by a sprawling web of more than 125 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) spread across seven different Indian states.

Together, these companies are responsible for crafting airframe structures, complex wiring harnesses, precision mechanical units, and aerospace-grade electrical systems.

The most enduring impact of this partnership, however, lies in the transfer of advanced knowledge. Aerospace engineering requires uncompromising material quality and exact machining tolerances.

To ensure local partners could rise to the challenge, Tata Advanced Systems and Airbus have certified 21 distinct, highly specialised aerospace manufacturing processes within India.

This vital qualification empowers domestic enterprises to step beyond this single project, establishing them as certified, competitive players in the broader global aviation market.

A Nationwide Manufacturing Footprint​

Rather than centralising all operations, the manufacturing blueprint is strategically distributed across India to stimulate regional growth:
  • Hyderabad: Serves as the Main Component Assembly (MCA) hub, where the aircraft's primary structural blocks are constructed and pieced together.
  • Nagpur and Bengaluru: Function as critical engineering centres contributing highly complex structural components and precision-machined parts to the supply line.
  • Vadodara: The entire network converges at the Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Gujarat, inaugurated in October 2024 as the country's first private-sector military aircraft assembly plant. Here, the complete aircraft undergoes final integration, extensive ground testing, and flight evaluations before being handed over to the IAF.

Labour-Hour Indigenisation and Economic Impact​

Airbus measures the success of this localisation through "labour-hour indigenisation," an approach that tracks the actual volume of physical work executed within the country rather than just counting parts.

This metric highlights a steady transfer of complex manufacturing responsibilities to local partners. By the time the 32nd aircraft enters the production line, the project anticipates reaching up to 98% indigenous labour content, matching the man-hours previously required at the Airbus facility in Spain.

The economic ripple effect is substantial. Beyond generating an estimated 600 direct, highly skilled roles and thousands of indirect jobs, the project is prompting traditional engineering firms to elevate their standards.

MSMEs previously focused on automotive parts or heavy industrial fabrication are now successfully investing in aerospace-grade quality control systems and advanced machining tools.

Advancing Domestic Tech and Future Maintenance​

Furthermore, the C-295 is serving as a powerful launchpad for integrating domestic defence technology.

Crucial mission equipment, including advanced radar warning receivers by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and countermeasure dispensing systems by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), are being integrated into the aircraft's modular electronic warfare suite.

This "plug-and-play" approach demonstrates that locally designed self-protection systems can successfully reduce India's reliance on imported avionics.

Looking ahead, as the Indian Air Force builds its C-295 operational squadrons, the next phase of this industrial evolution will focus on Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services.

A dedicated D-level maintenance facility will be established to support the fleet throughout its multi-decade lifecycle, promising continuous business for local MSMEs in logistics, component repair, and engineering support long after the final aircraft rolls off the assembly line.
