The Indian Air Force (IAF) is calling for restraint in the face of media speculation regarding the recent crash of a Tejas Mk1A fighter jet. During an interview with WION, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, Chief of the Air Staff, stressed that the cause of the crash remains under active investigation.
The IAF has established a Court of Inquiry (CoI) to thoroughly examine all aspects of the incident. Chaudhari emphasized that the CoI is meticulously analyzing evidence recovered from the crash site, along with statements from the pilot, who ejected safely. Only after this extensive process is completed will the IAF receive a final report outlining the definitive cause of the accident.
The Tejas Mk1A crash represents a somber milestone for the indigenous fighter jet program, marking the first accident involving the Tejas aircraft since its inaugural flight in 2001. Prior to this incident, the Tejas had enjoyed a successful track record throughout over two decades of service.
The aircraft involved in the crash was a part of the IAF's Second LCA Tejas Squadron and had achieved Final Operational Clearance (FOC) configuration. This certification process includes rigorous testing to ensure the aircraft meets all operational requirements. Further, the Tejas in question was relatively new, having been in service for only three years.
The IAF, along with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the manufacturer of the Tejas, remain committed to determining the root cause of the crash. This information will be crucial to ensure the continued safe operation of the Tejas Mk1A fleet and to inform future improvements within the Tejas program.
