IAF Sees Direct Su-57E Acquisition as Crucial Stopgap to Counter China-Pak Stealth Threat Until AMCA is Ready

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is reportedly re-evaluating its procurement strategy, showing renewed interest in a direct, off-the-shelf purchase of Russia’s Su-57E fifth-generation stealth fighter.

This potential acquisition is being viewed as a critical interim measure to counter emerging aerial threats in the region, particularly Pakistan’s reported interest in acquiring the Chinese J-35A stealth jet, while India’s indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program progresses towards full-scale production, expected in the mid-2030s.

Currently operating with 31 fighter squadrons against a government-sanctioned strength of 42, the IAF is looking for practical solutions to bolster its capabilities.

This shift towards a direct purchase prioritises rapid deployment over the complexities of immediate large-scale local manufacturing.

Discussions about the Su-57E, known by its NATO reporting name "Felon," have been revived after the joint Indo-Russian Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) program was shelved in 2018 over disagreements on cost, technology sharing, and the aircraft's capabilities.

Since early 2025, Moscow has been actively promoting the Su-57E to India, offering technology transfer incentives to compete with other international suppliers.

Sources indicate the IAF is considering acquiring a limited number of 40 to 60 Su-57E aircraft, enough to equip two or three squadrons.

This initial batch would be procured directly from Russia’s manufacturing facilities, with deliveries potentially beginning by 2028.

The Su-57E is known for its exceptional agility, supercruise capability (flying at supersonic speeds without using afterburners), and its design for high-altitude combat, making it suitable for operations over the Himalayas.

Furthermore, the aircraft can be integrated with advanced hypersonic weapons, such as the Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missile, providing a significant strategic advantage.

A key part of the plan involves upgrading these aircraft in India after their induction.

These enhancements, similar to the "Super-30" modernisation program for India's existing Su-30MKI fleet, would involve integrating locally developed systems.

This includes Indian-made weapons, advanced Uttam Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radars, and indigenous mission computers.

This approach would ensure the new fighters are seamlessly integrated into India’s defence ecosystem without the high initial costs and long timelines associated with establishing a new production line from the outset.

While Russia has offered full Transfer of Technology (ToT) for licensed production at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s (HAL) facility in Nashik, this would require a larger commitment of over 100 aircraft to be economically viable.

IAF officials are reportedly cautious about such a large-scale investment, as it could divert funds from other high-priority acquisitions, most notably the ongoing tender for 114 additional Rafale jets under the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) project.

While local production would boost indigenisation and create jobs, the immediate fiscal priority appears to be a smaller, direct purchase.

The IAF's long-term preference remains the expansion of its French-made Rafale fleet, a project valued at over $20 billion, due to the aircraft's proven combat record and interoperability with existing assets.

However, the Su-57E is seen as filling a specific niche as a dedicated stealth platform to counter the growing capabilities of regional adversaries, including China’s J-20 stealth fighter.

The Su-57E could also function as a "drone mothership," controlling unmanned aerial vehicles like the S-70 Okhotnik-B for high-risk strike missions.

Ultimately, the IAF does not envision acquiring a massive fleet of the Russian jets. Instead, the Su-57E is being positioned as a deterrent and a "bridge" to maintain a technological edge until the indigenous AMCA is ready.

A potential order of 40-60 units, at an estimated cost of $80-100 million per aircraft, would total between $3.2 billion and $6 billion.

This is considered a manageable expenditure that would plug a critical capability gap without derailing other vital modernisation plans.

If acquired, these advanced fighters could be deployed at forward airbases like Ambala or Hasimara by the early 2030s.

Stop gap won't work because AMCA is 15 years away from now and we are at the lowest level of squadron strength, better we revive FGFA program and make 126+ FGFA based on Su-57 platform ! 126 FGFA and 114 Rafale will help to maintain quality level of fighter jet may not be in numbers !

Set inside our own system and communications, rest of Russian weapons are good like hypersonic missiles and other stuff. Software is the key in stealth tactics as it's all about planning and sensor input fusion . We must go for it now . Rest, our own stealth is not far away ,it's the engines which are out of sight so we must hit beg borrow steal button for it .

India must purchase 900 Empty Mig 35 with Soloviev D30F6M Engines and must buy 500 Empty Su57M1 with back radar, Helmet and AL51F1 Engines. Total 1400 Empty planes price would be 4.1 Lac Crore. Rest Indian Avionics and Russian Weapons along with British Pirate FLIR/IRST and HARM Missiles.

India will sign the deal for SU-57 with Russia during Putin's visit to India in December. The actual number may vary from 60 to 140.

Definitely YES. Also sign double amount purchase off the shelf numbers in preparation for Kashmir blowing up at any time going forward. Super India is economically strong enough to absorb all French and Russian stealth fighter production Work harder in Brics and ramp up exports. Things are gonna blow unless the terrorists vacate PoK. All possible Indian production needs Russian and French off the shelf purchases and large options should be exercised at the slightest whiff of things heating up. That is necessary for saving lives. Up the ante before enemies even think of it.

40 to 60 not enough, in coming years , MIG 29, Jaquar will be retired.
Plan accordingly.
Don't know when will Tejas will be fully operated

India need to prepare for War against combine might of China Pakistan Turkiye North Korea Saudi Arabia and Qatar say 3500 Planes. Like Jarasandh and Kalyavan come together these nations can attack any time as per their sweet will in togetherness. India has just 522 aircraft half of which is Obsolete fighters about to retire in 7 to 10 years maximum. India must raise 150 Squadrons to fight the Combined might of enemies. For this I suggested 900 Mig 35 and 500 Su 57M1 for 7.6 Lac Crore for Fully Loaded 1400 Planes.
36 New Rafaele for 60000 Crore, 114 New Tranche 4 Eurofighter for 1.3 Lac Crore, 300 Hawk 200 AJT with Honeywell F125 Engine and Fully Loaded with Indian British Avionics and Weapons for 90000 Crore may also be purchased.
So 1850 Planes besides 180 Tejas Mk1A, 200 Tejas Mk 2 and 150 AMCA, 272 Su30MKI, 36 Rafaele, 66 Mig 29 UPG, 40 Tejas Mk 1.
This will allow India pitting 2794 Planes against 3500 planes of enemy say 1 : 1.26.
Additionally 5 Squadrons of S 400 be purchased and 5 Squadrons of S 500 with100% ToT be manufactured in India along with 4 Voronezh Radars and 4 Container Radars. And 300 S1M Pantasir Defence Systems.

Total Estimate will be 10.5 lac crore for fully loaded fighter aircraft and 3.5 lac crore for Anti Ballistic Missiles and Radars.=14 Lac Crore for 40 Odd Years with one mid life avionics upgrade for fighters.

For Army only 30% of 60000=18000 Anti Tank Missiles be purchased from USA and Israel say 70% =42000 be manufactured in India. 2000 T90MS tanks be purchased from Russia and mfd. In India. And 30 Mi 26 T2V and 10 Chinook Helicopters be purchased from Russia and USA.

For Indian Navy 25 Old Russian Kilo Class and New German U214 Submarines be purchased. Similarly 12 Destroyers from France and U.K and Germany and 12 Mine Hunters cum Sweepers from Germany Sweden and Italy be purchased. One aircraft carrier Prince of Wales from U.K. be purchased with complete Blueprint.

Better to acquire atleast 60 nos. SU 57 with TOT source code and R37M AAM Kinjal missile etc., to safeguard our boarders till the so called AMCA becomes operational. Cannot pledge national security and Rafaels are too costly without any TOT/ source code and may be acquired in limited quantities. Even Naval SU57 could be considered for positioning at Nicobar for surveillance and defence as China has already acquired Humbantoto port

I don't understand why we are so sceptical in acquiring foreign planes in large quantities when we don't have the capability to make our own. It seems to be ego issue rather than any genuine cause. Earlier we acquired 36 Rafale where else everyone knew that it is not sufficient except our air force & govt. Now when they are facing war they are feeling the heat . We must acquire SU 57 100+ which is far better than Rafale. If we don't get GE engine fast then drop Tejas MKII & acquire Rafale in large numbers. Focus on AMCA.

We have to buy atleast 4 squadron of su 57E and atleast 5-6 squadron of rafale and increase the speed and induct atleast 2 squadron of Tejas .all these will help to fillup the squadron gap and would make Indian airforce in a strong situation for any conflict till the mass production of amca starts

I feel we shouldn't buy Su 57 E as it is not a full fledged 5th Gen fighter. Moreover, it is just an Air superiority fighter with more power. It's Al41 engines are also not that effective. We should rethink on this purchase and go for immediate outright purchase of more Rafale jets instead and concentrate on TEJAS MK 2 and AMCA.

Yeah , but we need them now to balance chinas stealth jets

Its better to purchase them rather producing Su 30MkI to fill the gap. We don't have engines to produce Tejas Mark1A and Mark2. Thus no other options left unless have own engine.

Keep the Rafale away. Do not waste money IAF should learn from recent operations. Rafale is not what it's hyped to be. Just because it locked into F35 in some choreographed war games does not mean it
Can fly against Chinese aircraft or Pakistan's patriot sir defence. Let Rafale prove itself in Ukraine even then we should keep away from Colonial powers like France. Jai Hind.

And pray, who told you that it can't fight against Pakistan and Chinese planes?? Rafale is overall the best all rounder India currently has.

Let me put my 2 $$ worth towards the main article.

First, the severe fighter shortage is a given. Huge orders of Tejas are outstanding, is also a given. The major bottleneck there is F-404 supply. HAL has committed to 3 lines for Tejas. So if engine supply keeps pace, we can get between 20 - 24 Tejas per year. However, we will have Jags, MiG-29 and M2k retirements, starting about 2030-2031 time frame. Minimum rate of retirement would be one Sqn every year. This means if Tejas supply is optimum, we can just replace the retirement. So we need both the Su-57 and the Rafales to actually build up numbers.

Normally, the delivery of the first ac is 3 years after contract signing and delivery is usually about 12 ac per year going by past history of both Dassault and Sukhoi. Thus assuming 60 Russian and 114 (120 ??) French ac give us a timeline for completion of 8 and 13 years respectively. This gives Bharat enough time to develop and start inducting the Tejas Mk2 and AMCA if both do not face delays. However, delays must be anticipated and factored for such complex programs.

My suggestion. Indian DPP permits the negotiation for an option clause for upto 50% of the original order, based on a mutually agreed timeline, at the same considerations ( cost etc). I feel this must be written into the contract as has been done before in some other acquisitions. This gives us breathing room to somewhat mitigate delays in indigenous projects, without compromising on numbers.

Such a clause is good for the supplier and importantly gives us time to do a good job on our own projects without being pressed for time to induct a half finished product.

This indecision, this confusion for last many decades have cost us so much. And when ultimately purchase it's always on an adhoc basis. After SU 30 MKI series India has not been able to take any decision on any platform. Rafale purchase was so much reduced that it almost made no change in our overall squadron strength. India has to think big, always big like China. So far as stealth fighter programme is concerned they have upwards of 300 and targetting 1000 numbers soon and now they have made the test flight of their six generation platform, while for almost a decade of indecision on the acquisition of 114 MRFA and having scrapped it bespeak of a confused and immature handling of the whole . This indecision was shown by Congress and now our BJP leaders though the situation is slightly better now. Moreover as the India sets it's sight on 5th generation planes by 2035 to 2045 rest of the world including China, US, UK, Rest of Europe would be handling sixth generation.
Adhoc ism has to go out of the window, our targets and decisions are to be first reassessed, prioritise the whole military industrial ecosystem and fast track the AMCA program and seriously consider the buying off the shelves and joint production of SU 57 armed with hypersonic Kinzal missiles if we are thinking of a two front war. Actually with the hostiles in Bangladesh we need to be prepared for a three front war in the near future.

IAF is doing an excellent job. North Korea is not doing hostile actions against India. Saudi Arabia owns the nuclear weapons in Pakistan it has every right to keep itself away from being drawn into the mud by Pakistan.
First we need to earn money before we move.
A G2G purchase of massive numbers of Embraer and Mitsubishi commercial aircraft. We have to be on a war footing earning cash from operating cheaper airlines transporting the world to spend money in India.
Hard cash is badly required First. Cheaper aircrafts with cheaper airlines. Small airports upgraded to instigate a transport boom. China is not our enemy. Terrorism is everyone's enemy. Be proactive assist with planes and create cheaper Indian airlines as well as linked overseas ones bringing people with money to come spend money in India. Assist Brazil and Japan in bringing competition into the civil aviation sector. Also help China. Competition and economics will assist everyone become rich and bring lasting peace. Allow Guwahati become a sister city of Phuket and Cebu. A strong union assisting each other become civil aviation hubs allowing onwards flights from each other. Use G2G money and deals in bringing hard cash. As money flows in changes will happen automatically.
Then plan an efficient proper whitewash. It's long overdue because of inefficiencies and incompetence. period.
MoD needs to assist set up munitions facilities in overseas locations to assist the defence of countries needing support. Become an efficient productive defence contractor everywhere Indian assistance is required. It will bring peace and enrich all. Parents would protect the lives of their children by stopping infiltration and radicalism. On the other hand show nerves by physically wiping out threats to innocent lives. Go out earn money, make everyone rich and prosperous and INSURE security.

Do it . We need them anyways and I don't think this will hurt the domestic projects at all because AMCA has steady funding already and will make it's first flight in 2032 . And will fly late into the 2050-60s so thinking about it right now , we'll most likely retire su 30 mki , mirage 2000 , mig 29 , jaguar, everything by then. There is enough space for AMCA and tejas mk1a/mk2 in the airforce even if we buy 114 rafales and around the same number of su 57s. The need of the hour is a 5th gen jet even if it's not completely 5th gen. It will still act as a deterrent. This is a very good idea and opportunity for indian govt. To modernise the IAF. 114 rafales 120 su 57 , retire all jaguars as soon as the deliveries of these jets start , then retire mig 29 upg and then either retire the mirage or upgrade it. It's perfect IMO. Plus i heard DOD was planning on expanding max fleet Size to 56 from the current sanctioned 42 so there's the answer to the "do we have enough space" problem.
