India's Akash SAM Competes with Chinese 'Sky Dragon' in High-Stakes Brazilian Air Defence Bid

India's Akash surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, often dubbed the Indian "Iron Dome," is in direct competition with China's Sky Dragon-50 for a lucrative air defence contract with Brazil. The Brazilian military is currently evaluating both systems as part of its Medium Altitude/High Altitude Air Defence Artillery System project.

This high-stakes competition has significant implications for both India and China, as securing the Brazilian contract would be a major boost for either country's defence industry.

The Akash system, developed by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), is known for its ability to simultaneously engage multiple targets, its built-in electronic countermeasures, and its mobility due to being mounted on trucks. On the other hand, the Sky Dragon-50, while categorized as a medium-range SAM, has its exact range undisclosed.

Brazil's decision is not solely based on technical capabilities. It also involves geopolitical considerations and potential economic benefits from either partnership. Brazilian military chief General Tomas Miguel Mine Ribeiro Paiva has expressed interest in a government-to-government agreement with India for the Akash system, but he is also scheduled to visit China to discuss potential bilateral cooperation.

Live demonstrations of both systems have been conducted for Brazilian officials, with the Sky Dragon-50 showcased in China in 2023 and the Akash demonstrated in India.

This competition highlights the growing global demand for advanced air defence systems and the increasing competitiveness of the international arms market. The outcome of this evaluation will undoubtedly influence Brazil's military capabilities and its relationships with both India and China.
