India is accelerating its efforts to develop the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), its indigenous fifth-generation fighter jet. A prototype of the AMCA is expected to be ready by 2028-29, according to official sources.

The ambitious project has received the green light from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) and is envisioned as a 25-tonne twin-engine stealth aircraft, equipped with an internal weapons bay and a diverterless supersonic intake. The AMCA's development is being led by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which has already initiated manufacturing activities.

To expedite the project, the Defence Ministry is actively seeking significant involvement from the private sector. A model for private sector participation is expected to be finalized within the next six months.

The AMCA is a crucial project for India, as it represents the nation's sole fifth-generation fighter aircraft in development. This comes at a time when China, India's neighbor, is making significant strides in developing and deploying its own advanced fighter jets.

The AMCA's development is planned in two phases: the MK1 will be powered by the General Electric F414 engine, while the MK2 will feature a more powerful engine, co-developed with Safran of France.

In parallel, the development of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)-Mk2, a larger and more capable version of the current LCA, is also progressing. The LCA-Mk2 prototype is expected to be ready by 2027 and will be powered by the GE F-414 engine.

The AMCA project represents a significant step forward for India's aerospace industry and its military capabilities. The successful development and deployment of the AMCA will significantly enhance India's air power and bolster its defense capabilities in the region.
