If a major conflict were to erupt between India and China, the battlefield would not be confined to the rugged Himalayan borders.

The Indian Ocean Region (IOR) would immediately emerge as a decisive theatre of war. This vast maritime expanse is the absolute lifeline for much of China’s international trade and energy imports.

Because of its dominant geographical location, India holds a distinct upper hand in these waters. Instead of trying to build a fleet to match the sheer size of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), the Indian defence establishment can leverage this geography to aggressively squeeze Chinese supply routes.

Both nations are acutely aware of this naval dynamic. Chinese policymakers and military analysts frequently highlight the country's vulnerability in this area, referring to it as the “Malacca Dilemma”—a term originally coined in 2003 by former Chinese President Hu Jintao.

The dilemma stems from Beijing’s immense reliance on the Strait of Malacca, a narrow waterway connecting the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea.

Approximately 25% of all global maritime trade and nearly 80% of China’s crude oil imports pass through this single chokepoint.

Recognizing that a close-range blockade of mainland Chinese ports is impractical, India’s strategy is designed around sea denial and the disruption of these vital transit routes in the Indian Ocean.

India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands serve as the linchpin for this maritime strategy. Situated perfectly at the western mouth of the Malacca Strait, this island chain offers an unparalleled staging ground.

The region is managed by the Andaman and Nicobar Command—India’s only joint-services military command—which allows for seamless coordination between naval ships, aircraft, and surveillance units.

Key infrastructure, such as INS Baaz at Campbell Bay—the southernmost air station of the Indian Armed Forces commissioned in 2012—directly overlooks the Six Degree Channel, vastly enhancing India's intelligence gathering and reconnaissance capabilities.

Operating from these forward island bases, the Indian military can keep a relentless watch over one of the busiest shipping lanes on the planet.

Rather than attempting to physically block the narrow waterways, Indian forces would focus on tracking enemy movements, shadowing hostile naval groups, and establishing high-risk zones where Chinese military operations would become exceedingly dangerous.

This unbroken surveillance network is powered by a combination of assets, including Boeing P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, long-range drones, satellites, and surface warships, ensuring continuous monitoring of the eastern Indian Ocean.

Beneath the surface, submarines add a highly lethal layer to India's strategy.

With the successful commissioning of all six Scorpene-design Kalvari-class diesel-electric submarines, the Indian Navy can silently patrol the shallow waters near these regional chokepoints. This invisible presence creates immense tactical uncertainty for Chinese fleet commanders.

Looking ahead, the planned introduction of nuclear-powered attack submarines will further expand India’s ability to project power and challenge hostile deployments across the broader ocean.

Crucially, these naval assets are primarily designed for deterrence and area denial, rather than achieving total dominance over all commercial maritime traffic.

Geography also imposes a severe distance penalty on China. While the Indian Navy operates directly out of its home ports, any Chinese fleet entering the Indian Ocean must sustain combat operations thousands of kilometres away from the mainland.

This massive distance creates a logistical nightmare, requiring a continuous chain of supply ships and overseas support bases just to keep vessels operational.

India enjoys the distinct advantage of highly compressed supply lines, making fuel resupply, ship repairs, and aircraft deployment significantly faster and more reliable.

To mitigate this vulnerability, Beijing has aggressively invested in overseas infrastructure, often referred to as the "String of Pearls." This network includes the development of maritime facilities such as the Gwadar port in Pakistan and various transit projects in Myanmar.

While these facilities provide necessary logistical relief for commercial ships and some naval assets, they do not solve the fundamental challenge of supplying and protecting a massive combat fleet operating far from home during wartime.

Consequently, safeguarding these vital sea lines of communication would become the primary operational focus for both militaries. The Indian Navy would simultaneously need to protect its own commercial shipping, ensuring that the country’s access to energy imports and global trade remains untouched.

To guarantee this security, absolute maritime domain awareness is essential. India has heavily invested in modernizing its surveillance grid, deploying comprehensive coastal radar networks, underwater sensors, and dedicated military satellites. These systems work together to track both surface vessels and submarine movements across vast stretches of the Indian Ocean.

Furthermore, New Delhi leverages powerful international partnerships.

Through initiatives like the Quad’s Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA) and India's own Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) launched in 2018, partner nations rapidly share tracking data.

While this intelligence sharing does not automatically equate to joint military strikes in a conflict, it eliminates the "fog of war" by making regional shipping movements highly transparent.

Regional diplomacy also plays a major role in shaping wartime operations.

India maintains robust defence pacts with various Indian Ocean and Southeast Asian countries, frequently conducting joint naval exercises to improve interoperability.

Access to strategic locations, such as Indonesia’s Sabang Port near the Malacca Strait, offers tactical flexibility, though its use during a war would rely entirely on the host country's political stance and neutrality laws.

Similarly, existing logistics agreements with friendly nations allow Indian ships to easily refuel and repair during peacetime. How these agreements hold up during a shooting war would ultimately be decided by the political leaders of those respective governments.

However, military strategists must also operate within the confines of international law. Declaring a formal naval blockade is an extreme escalation with profound legal consequences. The way neutral commercial ships are treated during a conflict is strictly governed by the law of armed conflict at sea.

Therefore, any strategy involving the interception or disruption of maritime trade is subject to heavy legal, diplomatic, and practical constraints.

Even with these constraints, the economic fallout of a naval standoff would be catastrophic. Even without a full blockade, a surge in military activity would skyrocket shipping insurance premiums, force the rerouting of cargo vessels, and severely disrupt regional trade.

Because modern global supply chains are deeply interconnected, extended instability in the Indian Ocean would inflict heavy economic damage on countless nations, far beyond just India and China.

Ultimately, the Indian Ocean remains India's greatest strategic trump card in any large-scale confrontation with China. The region's geography allows New Delhi to monitor and threaten Chinese maritime lifelines much more easily than it can push back forces on the rugged Himalayan frontier.

While China may boast the world’s largest navy by ship count, the sheer difficulty of fighting a high-intensity naval war so far from its own shores gives the Indian Navy a defining, structural advantage.
