The Glidefire missile project is frequently mentioned in defence circles as a future anti-ship weapon for India, prompting rumours that it might eventually take the place of the renowned BrahMos missile.

However, the situation is not that simple. Rather than completely substituting the BrahMos, Glidefire is expected to slot into a wider network of weapons. This approach ensures that the high-end BrahMos is saved for the most critical and demanding missions.

Understanding this difference is vital. In today's complex maritime battleground, naval forces require a multi-tiered array of weapons rather than relying on a single silver bullet.

Moving Beyond a Single Solution​

For the past two decades, the BrahMos cruise missile has been the primary punch of India's naval forces. Boasting speeds of up to Mach 3 and an extended range of over 450 kilometres, this heavyweight, supersonic weapon is undoubtedly lethal.

However, it was never designed to be a universal solution. Due to its large size and high cost, it demands heavy launch equipment. It is simply not practical or economical to equip every small vessel with it, nor does every enemy ship require such a massive, high-end strike.

This reality brings the Glidefire project into perspective. While occasionally highlighted in industry talks, it is currently not viewed with the same urgency as major DRDO initiatives like the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR) or the BrahMos-NG.

Current details point to Glidefire acting as a budget-friendly, medium-range weapon for maritime or land strikes, rather than serving as the next-generation BrahMos.

The roles of these weapons are distinctly different. The BrahMos is a heavy hitter designed to smash through heavily guarded naval fleets and destroy high-value targets rapidly.

In contrast, a missile like Glidefire would serve a more everyday tactical purpose, offering a cost-effective way to strike medium-range targets from smaller ships that cannot carry heavier weapons. Therefore, Glidefire shares more similarities with the NASM-MR than with the BrahMos.

The Rise of the NASM-MR​

The DRDO's NASM-MR is shaping up to be a cornerstone of India's future naval firepower. Functioning similarly to the American Harpoon, it bridges the gap between light torpedoes and massive cruise missiles.

With an operational range of around 350 kilometres, a 150-kilogram warhead, and the ability to cruise at speeds of Mach 0.9, it is engineered to be launched from fighter jets like the MiG-29K, as well as surface warships and submarines.

To complement this, India has also successfully tested the NASM-SR (Short Range), a helicopter-launched variant capable of striking targets at 55 kilometres.

A Diversified Strike Architecture​

These developments highlight a strategic transformation within the Indian Navy. The focus has shifted toward building a diverse arsenal where specific missiles are tailored for specific jobs.
  • The Heavyweight Tier: The original BrahMos will continue to dominate the top tier of naval warfare. Meanwhile, the upcoming BrahMos-NG (Next Generation) will revolutionise the fleet by offering a lighter, more compact supersonic option. Weighing roughly half as much as the original, the BrahMos-NG will allow smaller aircraft like the LCA Tejas to carry out supersonic maritime strikes.
  • The Mid-Weight Tier: Sitting just below these supersonic giants will be subsonic weapons like the NASM-MR and potentially the Glidefire. These provide commanders with flexible, affordable, and numerous options for targets that do not warrant the explosive force of a BrahMos.
  • Specialised Strike: The military is also developing completely distinct tools, such as the Rudram series for taking out enemy radar systems, and the Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) for deep-strike ground missions.

The Future is Distributed Lethality​

Ultimately, the Glidefire should be seen as a supporting player in a much larger defensive strategy. The defining trend for the Indian Navy is "distributed lethality"—the concept of arming a wide variety of ships and aircraft with a mix of specialised weapons.

Using a premium supersonic missile to sink a small logistics boat is a waste of resources. By maintaining a layered inventory, naval commanders can choose the exact tool needed for the job at hand.

This layered strategy also heavily benefits the domestic defence industry. Creating multiple missile lines builds a robust manufacturing base, enhances technical know-how, and ensures a steady supply of munitions during conflicts.

Consequently, the Indian Navy is not looking for a single replacement for the BrahMos. Instead, through the combined forces of NASM-MR, BrahMos-NG, Rudram, and potentially Glidefire, India is forging a comprehensive maritime strike network where every missile has a unique and vital purpose in securing the Indian Ocean Region.
