Indian Army to Receive First Batch of MKU NW-3000 Night Vision Weapon Sights by End of 2026


The Indian Army is preparing to integrate the first lot of locally produced Netro NW-3000 Night Vision Weapon Sights by the close of 2026.

Manufactured by the Kanpur-headquartered defence firm MKU, this initial delivery of roughly 4,000 units represents a major step forward in India's push to upgrade its infantry forces under the Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured (IDDM) framework.

This rollout is the first phase of a broader ₹660 crore (USD 62.1 million) agreement finalized in October 2025, which encompasses a total of 29,762 weapon sights.

Rigorous Testing and Indigenous Push​

Before securing the contract, the NW-3000 underwent rigorous field trials by the Ministry of Defence spanning nearly a year.

These evaluations tested the equipment in punishing environments, ranging from freezing high-altitude posts to extreme heat, ensuring absolute reliability for troops deployed in diverse and harsh terrains.

Successfully passing these hurdles allowed the system to be procured under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.

Notably, the project boasts over 51% indigenous content and involves a consortium that includes Medbit Technologies Pvt. Ltd., aligning perfectly with the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative to cut down on foreign military imports and boost local manufacturing.

Technical Capabilities and Weapon Integration​

Engineered as part of MKU's Netro series, these Generation-3 Image Intensifier devices are designed to give special forces and infantry a decisive edge in completely dark or low-light scenarios.

They are slated to be paired directly with the Army's 7.62x51mm SIG 716 assault rifles. Because they are compatible with standard MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rails, they can be rapidly mounted without requiring complex weapon modifications.

Additionally, the inclusion of a built-in infrared (IR) illuminator ensures that troops can maintain visibility and lock onto targets even when there is absolutely no ambient starlight available.

A standout feature of the NW-3000 is its advanced sensor technology that grants soldiers a much wider field of view than older, conventional models.

This broader perspective minimizes the need for operators to physically scan their heads or weapons back and forth, keeping their situational awareness high while remaining undetected.

To support the Army long-term, the procurement guarantees a 10-year or 10,000-hour operational lifespan for the devices, backed by a comprehensive decade-long maintenance and training support package.

With American chinese western armies moving towards Gen-4 night vision devices with FOM-2100 and above equipping Indian army especially special forces regiments with Gen -3 n d of FOM-1700 and below is a retrograde step . All546 battalions need to be provide for within the next 5 years as giving peacemeal orders is a waste of time and resources . All special forces battalions must be equipped with Gen-4 devices manufactured by TONBO Bangalore based company
 
Agree totally. The money spent on personnel equipment - vests, hemlets, sights, goggles, com equipment is miniscule compared to western standards...
 
Modernization should be driven by operational requirements and capability, not just procurement cycles. While higher FOM image intensifiers can provide advantages in demanding conditions, FOM alone does not determine overall night vision performance. Resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, halo, EBI, reliability, ruggedness, and lifecycle support are equally important.

A long-term acquisition plan that equips all infantry battalions with modern NVGs and prioritizes the highest-capability systems for Special Forces would be far more effective than fragmented, small-batch procurements. However, procurement decisions should be based on transparent user trials, objective technical evaluation, lifecycle support, and cost-effectiveness—not a predetermined manufacturer.

Also, if any OEM is marketing a product as "Gen-4" without an internationally recognized technical standard or is making misleading capability claims, such assertions should be independently verified. Defence procurement must rely on measurable performance parameters and validated user trials, not marketing terminology. Any deliberate misrepresentation should invite appropriate action under the procurement rules, including debarment where warranted.
