BEL Secures Land in UP Defence Corridor for QRSAM, Kusha Air Defence System and Next-Gen Radar Manufacturing Facility

In a major push toward India's self-reliance in military manufacturing, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has officially acquired 75 hectares of land within the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor at Chitrakoot.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently presented the formal allotment letter to BEL Chairman and Managing Director Manoj Jain in Lucknow.

Backed by an investment ranging between Rs 562.5 crore and Rs 600 crore, this venture is projected to create over 300 direct jobs, alongside widespread indirect employment opportunities throughout the Bundelkhand region.

This new, state-of-the-art manufacturing plant is being established to drive some of the nation's most crucial and high-tech military projects.

The facility's production lines will be heavily focused on next-generation radar technologies, the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) system, and the highly anticipated long-range Kusha Air Defence System.

By anchoring these specific technologies, the Chitrakoot unit will become a vital pillar in India's multi-layered aerial protection network.

The QRSAM system, an initiative developed in partnership with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is engineered to shield moving armoured military convoys from sudden aerial attacks.

Operating this system effectively requires seamless communication between missile launchers, command centres, and tracking radars.

BEL’s upcoming plant will drastically boost the mass production and assembly of these complex components, ultimately helping the Indian armed forces deploy these vital systems much faster.

Equally important is the facility's central role in Project Kusha, frequently described as India's indigenous answer to the "Iron Dome."

Designed to intercept stealth fighters, drones, and cruise missiles at ranges up to 400 kilometres, Kusha is a protective shield aiming for deployment around 2028-29.

Manufacturing such a sophisticated system requires highly specialized industrial support.

The new BEL site is uniquely positioned to deliver the necessary hardware to counter modern aerial threats, significantly reducing India's historical reliance on imported platforms like the S-400.

Beyond building new weapons, the Chitrakoot facility will also feature a dedicated Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) centre.

While often underrepresented in standard manufacturing blueprints, lifecycle support is essential for keeping military hardware battle-ready.

Having an MRO centre integrated directly into the manufacturing site will allow the armed forces to repair and upgrade their equipment locally and rapidly, ensuring that crucial defence systems maintain high operational availability.

The strategic placement of this plant within the broader Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor—which spans six active nodes including Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, Kanpur, Chitrakoot, and Lucknow—magnifies its economic and strategic impact.

The corridor is designed to unify government enterprises, private companies, research labs, and smaller ancillary businesses into one highly efficient supply chain.

BEL’s massive financial commitment serves as a foundational anchor for this initiative, championing the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" vision by drawing in supporting industries and cementing the state as a premier hub for national defence production.
