Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL), a prominent Indian defence manufacturer, is anticipated to be awarded a substantial contract for the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) before the close of the fiscal year on March 31, 2025.
KSSL's emergence as the lowest bidder (L1) in the competitive tender process positions them to secure a significant portion of the total order.
The Indian Army's procurement plan involves 307 ATAGS units. Of these, KSSL is projected to receive a contract for approximately 185 systems, reflecting their competitive pricing strategy. The remaining units are expected to be manufactured by the Tata Group, which secured the second-lowest bidder (L2) position.
This dual sourcing approach highlights the Indian government's commitment to bolstering domestic defence production while simultaneously fostering healthy competition within the sector.
The ATAGS is a 155mm/52 calibre towed artillery gun, indigenously developed through a collaborative effort between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and private sector partners, including KSSL and the Tata Group.
This advanced artillery system is designed to supersede the Indian Army's existing, outdated artillery, offering improvements in range, accuracy, and maneuverability.
The ATAGS is a key component of India's artillery modernization drive, boasting features such as automated gun alignment, high mobility, and the capacity to operate across diverse terrains, including the challenging high-altitude regions along India's borders. Its advanced capabilities are expected to significantly enhance the Indian Army's firepower and tactical flexibility.
