In a significant move to bolster its defensive capabilities along the eastern border with China, India is expanding the deployment of its Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MR-SAM) system, developed in partnership with Israel. This strategic decision comes amidst continuing tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), especially in the sensitive regions of Ladakh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Ladakh, which has witnessed border confrontations in recent times, is already protected by both the MR-SAM and the indigenously developed Akash missile systems. The MR-SAM, known as “Abhra” in India, plays a crucial role in providing air defence against a wide array of aerial threats, such as fighter jets, drones, and cruise missiles. The presence of these systems in Ladakh underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding its territorial integrity.

Now, the Indian Army is focusing on enhancing air defence capabilities in the Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh sectors. These areas are of strategic importance due to their proximity to the Chinese border and challenging terrain, which necessitates robust defensive measures. The deployment of MR-SAM in these regions aims to establish a multi-layered defence network capable of effectively countering potential aerial threats.

In Sikkim, MR-SAM units are being strategically positioned to protect vital infrastructure and military installations. The deployment strategy takes into account the unique geographical challenges of the region, ensuring comprehensive air defence coverage.

Arunachal Pradesh, with its vast and diverse terrain, requires a geographically spread-out yet effective deployment of missile systems. The MR-SAM’s ability to engage threats at various altitudes and ranges makes it particularly well-suited for this region, where the landscape varies from dense jungles to high-altitude mountain passes.

Developed jointly by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), the MR-SAM system boasts advanced capabilities, including an operational range of up to 70 kilometers, enabling it to effectively neutralize a wide range of aerial threats.

This increased deployment of MR-SAM along the eastern border is not merely a show of force but a strategic manoeuvre aimed at deterring potential aggression and ensuring regional stability. It reflects India’s commitment to maintaining a strong defensive posture while upholding a policy of peace through strength. This move could potentially shift the regional balance of power, prompting neighboring countries to reassess their security strategies.

India is making borders so secure that the enemies have no chance of any inroads. That era of 1962 even 2020 is long past. Chinese missiles have been equalled with Prahar and Pralaya.

I believe this is a JV with Israel; most of the important systems are likely to be of Israeli make.
AKA pretty much nothing. Screws are ours. Rocket motor is ours but its not something they cannot build. Hence Israel exports their version to the world called Barak 8 not by the name MR-SAM. Seeker is Israeli, guidance kit is israeli, software is israeli, warhead is israeli, radar and communication is israeli.

Ahhh the tata truck that it is mounted on is ours.

Makes sense abhinav? Its a great SAM system. Amazing in fact. But there is nothing important that is Indian. R&D brother, R&D is your answer.
