The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to receive the final two squadrons of the S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems from Russia by 2025, according to Air Chief Marshal AP Singh. The delivery of these crucial systems was delayed due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, but the IAF chief confirmed that the remaining units are expected next year.

India signed a deal with Russia in October 2018 for five S-400 squadrons at a cost of approximately Rs 35,000 crore. The S-400 is an advanced air defence system capable of targeting various aerial threats, including aircraft, missiles, and drones, at ranges up to 400 kilometers.

Three squadrons have already been delivered and are operational along India's borders with China and Pakistan. The first unit was fully operational by December 2021.

However, delivery of the remaining two squadrons faced delays attributed to several factors, including payment issues, supply chain disruptions caused by the Ukraine conflict, and logistical challenges in transporting the complex systems.

Sources indicate that while payment issues were resolved early on, the focus of Russian defence manufacturers shifted towards meeting the demands of the conflict in Ukraine.

Furthermore, the intricate nature of the S-400 system, with its interconnected components, necessitates the delivery of all parts for it to be operational.

Despite these challenges, India has consistently engaged with Russia to expedite the delivery process. The acquisition of the S-400 system is a crucial component of India's efforts to bolster its air defence capabilities, particularly in light of regional security concerns.

The S-400's ability to track multiple targets simultaneously and engage them with a variety of missiles makes it a formidable asset for the Indian Air Force.

Once all five squadrons are operational, India's air defence network will be significantly enhanced, providing a robust shield against potential aerial threats.
