IAF's Rafale Jet Now Capable of Shooting Down Chinese "Spy Balloons" Like US F-22 Raptor Did in 2023

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully demonstrated its capability to eliminate high-altitude surveillance balloons, similar to the one downed by a US F-22 Raptor in early 2023. This achievement places India among a select group of nations with the capacity to counter such threats.

Sources reveal that a few months ago, an IAF Rafale fighter jet neutralized a balloon target over the Eastern Air Command's area of responsibility. The balloon, smaller than the one downed by the US, was carrying a payload and flying at an altitude exceeding 55,000 feet. An "inventory missile" was successfully used to destroy the target.

This operation comes in the wake of increased concern over the use of such balloons for surveillance. In early 2023, the US Air Force shot down a Chinese spy balloon that had traversed across North America, sparking a diplomatic row and highlighting the vulnerability to this form of intelligence gathering. Following this incident, at least two other balloons were detected within a week.

India, too, reportedly observed a similar balloon over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around the same time. However, no action was taken then, and the balloon eventually drifted away. These balloons are suspected to possess steering mechanisms enabling them to hover over specific areas for prolonged surveillance.

The IAF has been actively preparing for this type of threat. Last year, discussions were held with the US Air Force on countering high-altitude balloons. This recent successful operation confirms that the IAF has developed the necessary standard operating procedures and possesses the technology to effectively neutralize such targets.

This development significantly enhances India's defence capabilities, particularly along its eastern borders. The IAF's successful demonstration sends a clear message about its preparedness to address evolving security challenges and safeguard national interests.

HAL+ADA+TATA should make twin engine ORCA powered by two Kaveri 2.0 (80KN) engines its air frame should be copy of Rafale ! If we select Rafale under MRFA it should be powered by more powerful engines to attain Mac 2.5 speed !

I just wrote yesterday about doing the same thing with one of our own and old balloon to show Great deterrent example for criminal chinese ccp.
It would surely make them to think twice to send any of their high altitude ballons into Indian airspace.
Wonderful news to start a day with.

Its not so easy to shoot down a high flying balloon with its accessories as it has a very small radar reflection for radar guided missiles to lock on. The US used the f-22 and aim 9x missile to shoot it down. The balloon also does not have any engine to emit IR signature for missiles to lock on. The very fact it was observed over the Andaman and was not shot down is that we did not have a platform sophisticated enough to take it down, it needs to have a cutting edge radar, EO, and imaging missiles to do it. My guess is the rafale used the MICA IIR missile to do it. US seems to have given some inputs about its as it had been tracking it for a long time

Rafale is our most premier plane now and is used for all the important stuff. Once Rafale shows how it’s done, it’s replicated on other planes.
why do you need your premier plane to attack an unarmed baloon, may be Rafale is only good for this, of course Rafale is premium in cost for sure.

Just check the fact , why F-22 was used by US then comment
AS US used their own F22 to shoot the baloon, theae guys want to show off with their foreign item, Tejas can climb the same height as Rafale, SU-30 climbs even higher to 57,000 feet.

So you are saying F22 is good for this only? Rafale is rivaling F22 here.

The place where this baloon was attacked is the main base for F22.
Nope. The balloon passed through multiple states and close to multiple air bases. The said base itself has A10, F15, F16 and F35, apart from F22. F22 was the most premium one. So Rafale did what no other plane other than F22 did.

Rafale guns could have been put to use rather than firing costly air to air missiles. Americans did use aircraft’s guns when facing the same issue

There is no need for aircrafts to do this job. Drone launched from a high altitude pseudosatellite platform should do it. Not spend more than 500usd per balloon. Attrition war is economics war. Those who understand economics of unmanned nuisance will win. Fight robot with robot.
