The Indian Navy is significantly enhancing the capabilities of its Talwar-class frigates with a major overhaul that includes an upgraded A-192M Naval Gun and a shift to a Vertical Launch System (VLS) for the Shtil-1 Air Defence system. These upgrades mark a substantial leap in both offensive and defensive capabilities for these warships.
The A-192M Naval Gun replaces the older A-190E, offering improved range, accuracy, and firing rates. This gun, also found on Russia's Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates, is designed to engage both surface and aerial targets effectively, with a stealth-friendly design to minimize the ship's radar signature.
This upgrade not only increases the firepower of the Talwar-class frigates but also aligns them with modern naval combat requirements, where engaging multiple targets at extended ranges is essential.
Perhaps even more transformative is the shift from a twin-arm launcher to a VLS for the Shtil-1 Air Defence system. This change allows for a wider range of missiles to be deployed, including the Vertical Launch Short Range Air to Air Missile (VLSRAAM) and Medium Range Surface to Air Missiles (MRSAM).
The advantages of a VLS are significant:
- Increased capacity: More missiles can be stored and launched, enhancing the frigate's ability to handle multiple threats simultaneously.
- Faster reload: VLS enables quicker reloading, crucial during prolonged engagements.
- Reduced radar cross-section: The VLS configuration contributes to the ship's stealth by minimizing protruding structures.
- Flexibility: It allows for the integration of different missile types, providing a layered defence against aerial threats.
