In a move that could significantly deepen global defence cooperation, Italy is actively pursuing India's participation in the Eurodrone project. This collaborative European initiative, which also includes Germany, France, and Spain, aims to develop a cutting-edge medium-altitude, long-endurance drone for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions, as well as for civilian applications.

The Eurodrone, a product of a joint venture by Airbus, Leonardo, and Dassault Aviation, is more than just an unmanned aerial system; it represents a cornerstone of Europe's strategic autonomy in defence technology.

By developing this advanced drone, European nations aim to reduce their reliance on non-European unmanned aerial systems, enhancing their independent operational capabilities.

The program reflects a commitment to equipping their armed forces with systems at the forefront of technological advancement, meeting the complex needs of modern warfare and peacekeeping operations.

What sets the Eurodrone apart is its design as the first uncrewed aerial system certified to fly in non-segregated airspace. This means it can operate alongside manned aircraft in both civil and military airspace, expanding its global utility and supporting wide-area ISTAR missions in diverse operational theatres. The drone's ability to gather intelligence comparable to satellites, but at lower altitudes, offers a unique strategic advantage for detailed and real-time data acquisition.

Italy's interest in bringing India into the Eurodrone project reflects a broader strategic vision. India, with its rapidly growing aerospace and defence sector, represents a valuable partner for both technology development and market expansion. This potential collaboration could not only benefit the Eurodrone program but also further strengthen the defence ties between India and Europe.
