Mumbai: India's premier defence shipyard, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), has embarked on a significant project by initiating production of the first in a series of six Multipurpose Cargo Vessels (MPVs) for Navi Merchants, a subsidiary of Copenhagen Merchants Group, Denmark. This endeavor underscores MDL's growing prominence in the global shipbuilding arena.

The project, valued at approximately $86.05 million (around ₹700 crore), includes an option to construct four additional vessels. Each MPV, with a 7,500 Deadweight Tonnage (DWT) capacity, will be equipped with a hybrid propulsion system, ensuring adherence to stringent international emission norms. These vessels will be classified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), a globally recognized maritime classification society.

The ceremonial plate cutting event, attended by MDL Chairman and Managing Director Sanjeev Singhal and Navi Merchants CEO Simon Christensen, marked the official commencement of production.

These MPVs, designed to Ice Class 1B standards, will incorporate cutting-edge technologies like a controllable pitch propeller, a medium-speed diesel engine, and Electrical Energy Storage systems, ensuring compliance with DNV’s safety standards for unrestricted global operation.

The versatility of these vessels is a key highlight. They will be capable of transporting a diverse range of cargo, including dry bulk, project cargo, containers, steel, and hazardous materials.

Moreover, these ships will also be capable of performing multi-role support functions, including maritime surveillance and patrol, acting as targets for naval exercises, and operating various types of aerial vehicles.

The first vessel is slated for delivery in April 2026. This project not only reinforces MDL's commitment to delivering high-quality, technologically advanced maritime solutions but also showcases its dedication to environmental responsibility through the incorporation of hybrid propulsion systems.

It positions MDL as a leading player in the global shipbuilding industry, capable of meeting the evolving needs of international clients while upholding the highest standards of quality and sustainability.
