Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has achieved a significant milestone in India's pursuit of self-reliance in defence manufacturing. They have successfully indigenised the production of Polychloroprene rubber / Flow straightener, a critical component used to enhance the stealth capabilities of submarines.
This achievement is a testament to a collaborative effort with M/s Rotopump in Noida, M/s Rane Elastomer in Mumbai, and M/s Vajra Rubber in Kerala, showcasing India's growing expertise in defence technology.
The Polychloroprene rubber / Flow straightener plays a vital role in submarine operations. By ensuring the smooth and turbulence-free flow of seawater around the submarine, it significantly reduces the vessel's acoustic signature. This makes the submarine quieter and, consequently, more difficult to detect. In underwater warfare, stealth is paramount, as the ability to operate undetected can be decisive.
Previously, India relied on imports for this crucial component, primarily from M/s Naval Group in France. This dependency not only resulted in higher costs but also created strategic vulnerabilities due to reliance on foreign supply chains. MDL's successful indigenisation of the Polychloroprene rubber / Flow straightener marks a strategic shift towards greater self-reliance in defence production.
MDL's Indigenisation department spearheaded this initiative, working tirelessly to meet the stringent quality standards required for naval applications. By partnering with domestic companies like Rotopump, Rane Elastomer, and Vajra Rubber, MDL has not only reduced the need for imports but also fostered a growing ecosystem of local manufacturers capable of supporting complex defence projects.
