SAAB Offers Gripen Jet for India's MRFA Program with Advanced Variant, Local Production and Timely Delivery Promise

As the Indian Air Force (IAF) moves closer to procuring 114 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA), Swedish defence giant SAAB has entered the fray with a compelling offer centered around its Gripen fighter jets.

SAAB is emphasizing not only the advanced capabilities of its Gripen-E and Gripen-F variants but also a commitment to establishing a robust production and technology transfer ecosystem within India, aligning with the nation's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.

SAAB is highlighting the Gripen-E's cutting-edge technology, including advanced avionics, a powerful GE FE14G engine, and versatile payload capabilities.

Kent-Ake Molin, Head of Gripen for India Programme, emphasized the jet's advanced Human Machine Collaboration (HMC), stating, "We envisioned Gripen E to be an extension of the pilot's mind and body, and we achieve it through advanced Human Machine Collaboration (HMC)."

This HMC, coupled with a redesigned cockpit featuring a hands-on-throttle-and-stick (HOTAS) setup, aims to enhance pilot situational awareness and reduce workload.

Beyond its HMC, the Gripen-E boasts a new AESA radar, increased fuel capacity, and integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide pilots with real-time, mission-critical information. SAAB is also promising a rapid delivery timeline, claiming it can deliver the first batch of fighter jets within three years of securing the contract.

A cornerstone of SAAB's proposal is the commitment to local production and technology transfer. Drawing on its experience establishing a Gripen production line in Brazil, Molin stated, "We have already established a supply chain in India, and we are looking to gear up and see how we can build or establish a supply network for Gripen in India, to be made in India, being part of the Gripen industrial global system and also to export to other nations."

However, SAAB's bid faces challenges. The Gripen relies on foreign OEMs for key components like engines and radar systems, potentially hindering India's self-reliance goals.

Furthermore, the success of technology transfer and local production hinges on effective collaboration with Indian companies and navigating the complexities of the Indian defence landscape.

India's commitment to its indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas program also poses a challenge to the Gripen's prospects.

Despite these hurdles, the Gripen-E, with its advanced technology and the promise of local production, represents a strong contender in India's MRFA competition.

The final decision will depend on a careful evaluation of the Gripen's capabilities, SAAB's ability to deliver on its promises, and the alignment of the offer with India's long-term defence objectives.

Dassault needs to pull the socks , should Match other contender to remain Front Runner

India will still go with Rafale .....
Yeah But Not US Fighter jet which are back stabbers, second Tejas MK2 is in same category as Gripen (Single Engine+Similar Power plant +Takeoff weight) Third French have better weapon package & Most Important Naval variant of Rafale if French win Engine Development deal that Engine will b common platform for Rafale (36+26 + 114 MRFA ) AMCA TEDBF & Tejas MK2 , where Saab Lacks all this Add t that French can offer consultancy in AMCA Project TEDBF & SSN Developent (pump jet prop ) , Collaboration in Military satellite & Under water Drones Lots of option From French need to grab this all , Some Thing Great is cooking under Project INFRA

i hope drdo takes a cue from grippen and make it modular in hardware and software. It has to be designed ground up and will be very use full for the future when many hardware and software up grades have to be made due to integration of new weapon systems and many more future capabilities

France only can do this. Because France is the only super power in the world. They have done very good for india in mirage upgrade and back strabing in rafale deal.

Game changer Figter jet F-16 is making Big Impact isnt it, Vuhledar has been taken by ......................... & where are western media From day One Ukraine is winner, what they back strab in Rafale deal ................??

Then why Brazil is buying Rafales now....??
You clearly demonstrate that you don't know what you're talking about. You should be ashamed of sharing false information! Currently Brazil is not buying Rafale or any other attack aircraft!
Brazil remains committed and satisfied with the purchase of Gripen. So much so that they are thinking about increasing the number of units ordered.

Rafale-M is 400 millions usd per unit jet lifetime costs... F16 might be around 180 millions usd per jet..
Yup with addition of backstabbing & arms twisting where all equipments will be gutted if Bharat doesn't toe US policy.

Your comment is fine where logistics is concerned but all the above will have different highly expensive contracts.

India wants 114 jets not 50-60 jets for $18Bln budgeted and also transfer of technology, buying Rafale does neither.
Bharat will be foolish to think french will part away their hitech which they attained at a high cost.

Gripen would have made sense in 2017--18 when there was a RFP for SEF, they should have pitched in aggressively with local production and full ToT and make it as much indian as Tejas. But now it's too late as just Mk2 is 2 years awat ( fingers crossed). Gripen in 2018 would have solved out issue for both Tejas mk2 and MRCA and ADA could have solely focussed on AMCA and TEDBF.

India is capable of producing much better fighters than Gripen E, don’t know what Saab is talking about it doesn’t make sense to offer the same product which HAL is producing. GOI is still banking on US made GE engines. They are going to ruin and sabotage the AMCA. Hope some sense prevail with MOD and IAF.

Grippen does not meet Bharat’s needs and is a waste of time and resources…MRFA may just die naturally, but if it goes through I prefer Rafales, but only if they can be produced in Bharat with TOT and local ecosystem by 2030…Else let us scrap it and keep pushing Tejas Mk2, AMCA and also TEDBF along with a high thrust engine…

Dassault is 100% confident that IAF will eventually purchase a grand total of 200 Rafale jets!! Rafale-M actual ex-factory costs is 92 Millions Euros or else, 102 millions usd per jet costs in 2014. Now costs is 161 millions usd in 2024; barebones jet price! Means lifetime ops cots will be 400+ millions usd per jet!!

Gripen-E is better performer than F16 Blk72 but will costs higher i.e., closer to 260 millions usd per jet! Rafale nothing less than 400 millions usd lifetime ops costs per jet...

India should buy 5th generation fighters instead of MRFA. Instead split this into two parts. Buy 2 more squadrons of Rafale and buy 5 squadrons of 5th generation fighters. By the time we decide and start induction of these aircrafts it will be too late ~2030-35. We can't wait so long when china is inducting J20s. Buy off the shelf 4 sqd of 5th gen and 2 more sqd of Rafale.
Expedite Tejas mk2 and AMCA...for induction between 2035-40

Why not SAAB, they have their own 5th gen program FLYGSYSTEM 2020, unlike French who have to depend on three other Countries and can’t help us alone.

New ACM will decide that whether GripenE or else F21.. Rafale will be rejected very soon!
