Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE), a leading Indian shipyard, has achieved a major milestone by designing and constructing India's first-ever Double Lane Portable Steel Bridge.
This innovative bridge, with a 7.5-meter-wide carriageway, has been delivered to the Border Roads Organization (BRO) for use in strengthening infrastructure in India's border areas.
This development marks a significant step towards self-reliance in critical infrastructure, showcasing GRSE's engineering expertise and commitment to national strategic needs. The portable design allows for easy transportation and installation in challenging terrains, making it ideal for BRO operations in remote border regions.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in March 2024 between GRSE and BRO outlines the supply and installation of 27 Double Lane Portable Bridges of varying spans across Northeast India.
This two-year contract, valued at approximately Rs 60 crore, will enhance BRO's ability to connect remote areas and improve overall connectivity in the region. The bridges adhere to Indian Road Congress (IRC) Load Class 70 standards, ensuring they can handle heavy vehicular traffic.
"The MoU includes the fabrication, supply, erection, and launching of 27 double-lane bridges of carriageway 7.5 meters of load class 70 along the Northern and North Eastern border states," stated the official release.
This initiative not only strengthens India's domestic capabilities but also opens doors for exporting this technology to other countries with similar infrastructure needs. GRSE's Portable Steel Bridge Division has a strong track record, having supplied over 5,700 portable steel bridges across India and internationally.
