India's maritime sector is experiencing a period of robust growth, with the number of active Indian seafarers increasing from 117,090 in 2014 to nearly 300,000 today.

This surge is particularly notable in the number of women seafarers, which has seen an impressive 514% increase over the past decade. These figures were highlighted by Harsh Vardhan Shringla, India's former foreign secretary, during his address at the ninth convocation of the Indian Maritime University (IMU) in Chennai.

Shringla emphasized the significant role India plays in the global maritime industry, stating that the country is the third-largest provider of seafarers worldwide, following China and the Philippines.

Indian seafarers now comprise almost 10% of the global maritime workforce, according to data from the Directorate General of Shipping. This growth reflects India's commitment to revitalizing its rich maritime heritage and reclaiming its position as a leading maritime nation.

The IMU convocation celebrated the achievements of 1,974 graduates, including four doctoral scholars and one MS (by research) scholar. Dr. Malini V Shankar, IAS (Retd.), Vice Chancellor of IMU, presided over the ceremony and conferred degrees to the graduates.

Shringla also drew attention to the impact of global conflicts on the maritime economy. Citing the recent Hamas attacks against Israel and the subsequent disruption of shipping routes through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, he noted a 50% reduction in cargo volume, a 15-20% increase in shipping costs, and a 21% drop in exports to Europe. This highlights the vulnerability of global trade to geopolitical instability, as 80% of international trade relies on maritime transport.

He further acknowledged the crucial role played by the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard in ensuring maritime security, combating piracy, and providing humanitarian assistance in the Indian Ocean region. Their efforts contribute significantly to maintaining stability and security in this vital trade artery.

This growth in India's maritime workforce, coupled with its strategic location and historical maritime expertise, positions the country to play an increasingly important role in the global maritime landscape.
