The National Security Guard (NSG), India's elite counter-terrorism force, is enhancing its firepower with a significant upgrade to its AK-47 assault rifles. The NSG has procured 100 AK Mod Kits from SSS Defence, a Bengaluru-based defense manufacturer, to modernize its existing arsenal.
The AK-47, known for its reliability and ruggedness, has been a mainstay of the Indian Armed Forces for decades. Its familiarity among troops and the readily available 7.62 x 39mm ammunition make it a cost-effective and practical choice.
However, recognizing the need for enhanced capabilities in modern counter-terrorism operations, the NSG is taking steps to modernize these battle-proven rifles.
SSS Defence's SOPMOD (Special Operations Peculiar MODification) kit provides a comprehensive upgrade to the AK-47 platform. The kit includes a tactical folding buttstock for improved maneuverability in close-quarters combat, a flash suppressor to reduce muzzle flash and enhance stealth, and ergonomic enhancements like a cheek rest and butt pad for greater comfort and personalized customization.
Furthermore, the upgrade kit incorporates a Picatinny rail system, enabling the attachment of advanced optics and accessories. An M-LOK compatible fore-end allows for the integration of tactical lights, laser aiming devices, and even under-barrel grenade launchers. This modularity significantly increases the rifle's versatility and adaptability to various operational scenarios.
Importantly, the upgrade kit is designed for easy installation in the field, requiring minimal tools and specialized expertise. This ensures a smooth and efficient integration process for the NSG.
This modernization initiative highlights the NSG's commitment to equipping its personnel with the latest technology and enhancing their operational effectiveness in combating terrorism.
By leveraging domestically produced upgrade kits, the NSG not only strengthens its capabilities but also supports India's growing defence industry.
