The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has announced that the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) system will undergo its final round of trials by the end of 2026.

Upon successful completion, the Indian Army is poised to procure five of these advanced air defence systems, manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

Developed indigenously by DRDO, QRSAM is a state-of-the-art missile system designed to shield mobile military formations and critical assets from aerial threats.

Its unique capabilities, including “Search on Move,” “Track on Move,” and “Fire on Short Halts,” offer the Indian Army rapid deployment and response options in dynamic battlefield scenarios, eliminating the need for fixed positions.

The QRSAM system's effectiveness and reliability were last validated in 2022 through successful tests conducted at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha. These trials reinforced its significance as a cornerstone of India's defence infrastructure.

In response to operational feedback from the Indian Army in 2023, DRDO has integrated modifications into the QRSAM's design to enhance its battlefield performance and adaptability.

The system's final trials are anticipated to conclude by the end of 2026, paving the way for its imminent induction into the Indian Army. The procurement of five QRSAM systems will substantially bolster India's air defence capabilities, ensuring swift and effective protection against airborne threats.

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a prominent public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, will spearhead the manufacturing of these QRSAM systems. BEL's vast expertise in defence electronics positions it well to deliver this crucial capability to the Indian Army.

Key Features and Capabilities of QRSAM

  • Search and Track on the Move: Unlike traditional systems requiring static operation, QRSAM can detect and track enemy aircraft or missiles while in motion.
  • Engagement at Short Halts: QRSAM retains its ability to neutralize targets even during brief halts, offering a critical tactical advantage in rapidly evolving combat scenarios.
  • Multiple Target Engagement: This system can concurrently engage various aerial threats, encompassing aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
  • Advanced Electronic Countermeasures: QRSAM's sophisticated electronic countermeasures neutralize incoming electronic warfare threats, enhancing its survivability in modern combat.

It’s great that we have 100% indigenously designed, developed and manufactured the missile and system with 100% indigenous content. We need the QRSAM as it protects our military movement of troops, armoured vehicles, artillery, SAM, transport supplies and ammunition and radar systems which is critical.

It’s critical that we make sure that our radar and missile works properly and they implement the requirements and changes that the military suggested after conducting the tests and trials.

QRSAM is one of the fastest short range SAM system in the world , with mach 4.7 speed and fast reaction time. This is designed with protecting the armored column in mind and if also included a CIWS Gatling system it could become one of the deadliest SAM in the world. So please IA order more we have nearly 5000 tanks and more armored vehicles, just 5 systems can't protect everything.
