Armenia May Consider Buying India-made Su-30MKI Jets with Brahmos and Astra Missiles to Counter Azerbaijan’s JF-17 Thunder Purchase

In a significant move to counter the growing military capabilities of neighbouring Azerbaijan, Armenia is reportedly considering the purchase of India-made Su-30MKI fighter jets.

This potential acquisition, which could include advanced BrahMos and Astra missiles, highlights a major shift in Armenia's defence strategy and a deepening of its military alliance with India.

The consideration comes as a direct response to Azerbaijan's recent procurement of JF-17 Thunder fighter jets from Pakistan.

According to analysis from Sam Lichtenstein, a director at the risk intelligence firm RANE, Armenia is likely to favour the Indian Su-30MKI as a potent and financially viable option to strengthen its air force, noting it is significantly more cost-effective than alternatives like the French Rafale jets.

This strategic pivot is built upon a rapidly expanding defence relationship between New Delhi and Yerevan, which has flourished since the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

India has become a crucial supplier of military hardware to Armenia, evidenced by a landmark $250 million deal in 2022 for Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers, anti-tank weapons, and other ammunition. The potential addition of Su-30MKI fighters could further alter the region's military balance.

Azerbaijan's acquisition of the modern JF-17 Block III jets, a joint project between Pakistan and China, has created a new sense of urgency for Armenia to upgrade its own aerial fleet.

Currently, the Armenian Air Force operates a small contingent of four Russian-made Su-30SM jets.

The advanced Chinese avionics and long-range missiles on the JF-17 platform have prompted Armenia to seek a capable counter, with India emerging as the preferred strategic partner for this modernization effort.

The Indian Su-30MKI, manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is a heavily customised version of the original Russian aircraft. It is a versatile, twin-engine fighter jet celebrated for its long-range strike power and its integration of sophisticated Indian-developed electronic systems and weapons.

Analysts point out that at a fraction of the cost of a fully equipped Rafale, which can exceed $200 million per aircraft, the Su-30MKI presents a powerful yet affordable solution for Armenia.

Beyond purchasing new aircraft, Armenia is also exploring upgrades for its existing Su-30SM fleet with Indian assistance. Experts suggest India is a prime candidate to modernise these jets, which could enable them to carry formidable Indian munitions like the Astra air-to-air missile and the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

Such a move would not only enhance Armenia's firepower but also reduce its reliance on Russian military supplies, which have been hampered by production issues and international sanctions.

The integration of these weapon systems would provide Armenia with a significant strategic advantage.

The BrahMos missile, with a range of up to 450 kilometres and a high-supersonic speed, offers a powerful deterrent against ground targets. The Astra missile, with a range of 110 kilometres, would make the Armenian jets a lethal threat in air-to-air combat, outmatching the lighter payload capacity of the JF-17.

This potential deal is further driven by Russia's failure to deliver a previously ordered batch of eight Su-30SM fighters due to its own production constraints.

For India, a sale would mark its first-ever export of the Su-30MKI fighter jet, providing a major boost to its defence manufacturing industry and its geopolitical standing.

With HAL's production lines active—recently securing an order for 12 more jets for the Indian Air Force—India is well-positioned to supply the aircraft and provide essential pilot training and long-term maintenance support to Armenia.

Yes , this is good . Su MKI super tanker concept made news in 2000s era , it too should be tried. So special ops can be made even special . Naval application of such a super tanker can be great .

By the way , are we manufacturing these Su 30 on our own now ? Better improvise then with composits and avionics .

Very good news. I have said several times that some cartoon jokers were saying Armenia cannot afford Su-30MKI. I don't know how these fools say on what basis. I have also said that with Astra Missile, or even upgrading Armenian Su-30, it would be ideal. With a weapon package of Anti-Radiation Missile, Astra SAAW, and Nirbhay, it will be a potent fighter jet, better than Rafale. With most of the features and tech developed for Super Sukhoi, it will be an ideal upgrade for Armenia, as Russia is having a war with Ukraine and DRDO has developed GaN-based AESA Virupaksha Radar ahead of Russian AESA Radar.

Yes, our own 12 Su-30MKI order will start production by 2027. Not sure when Armenia gets its Su-30MKI if they order now.

All the components must come from Russia to be assembled in India.

And what about the Super Sukhoi upgrade?

Doesn't seem to be approved or agreed upon yet by MoD, so when will that begin?!

And wasn't Nashik supposed to start the Tejas Mk1A deliveries from the production line which was earlier used for Su-30MKI production?

Russia holds all IP rights for their product. No, you cannot sell. Also, around 30-40% parts of the Su-30 still come from Russia. No, this article is just bad journalism.

Wow offer them the upgraded variant with Virupaksha radar
Armenia is the size of Ladakh; why do they need such a big platform? If they are not satisfied with Tejas Mk1A, then surely Tejas Mk2 will fulfil their requirement. In the meantime, upgrade their Su-30s.

They already operate them; they wanted BrahMos and other Indian missiles integrated. We could sell Tejas, but they won't want them, or HAL won't make them before some countries get their 7th gen aircraft.

I dont think Armenians need Su-30 to counter JF-17.
In all likelihood, the Azhar-Bhaijaanis will prolly be getting J-10C s instead of JF-17.

JF-17 is dead.

We could have offered the Armenians Tejas Mk-2 to counter J-10s, but I guess Tejas Mk-2 will have to wait till ADA and HAL get their shlt sorted out.

Again, for that, you need original vendor permission. People writing these garbage articles live in an alternate reality. India cannot do upgrades or resell SU-30MKI without Russian permission.
In this case, India will be a subcontractor. It's a Russian sale, but manufactured in India, just like American Apple phones are manufactured in India. We will be making money on the assembly, plus mission computer, AESA, and weapons package. Obviously, if we want to cut Russia out of the equation, we would have called it by some other name, like how China does, taking a Russian product, fully reverse-engineering, and renaming it.

You are right, Super Sukhoi can surpass Rafale. Dont forget Brahmos. Upgrade the radar, mission computer. Integrate it with our weapons. It will be ki1ler deal. We will have to share a percentage with Ru because they are the original IP owners. But we will be making money on the weapons package & assembly cost.

This is great news. Su30 MKI is a very powerful platform combined with our weapons package. We can offer this upgrade to other Su30 operators. Replace the mission computer with ours. Then package and sell Brahmos, Rudram, Astra, Gandiva etc. This will prepare the ground for future sale of Tejas. Once we have established the superiority of Indian weapons package, its easier to sell Tejas. The key is we will have to break away from GE. Master Kaveri. Just effing integrate it with whatever we have.

As Op Sindoor shown us, these minor metrics such as thrust dont matter. What matters is the combined operation. When networked and operating as a single unit, the individual shortcomings will be overcome. So Kaveri with Tejas plus the ecosystem of Indian missiles plus the radars is a formidable system that can take on any adversary.

If Tajes was mass produced, by private company or even HAL under direct PMO control, Armenia would have considered to buy Tajes, & like wise many African, South East Asian, Western Asian /Middle Eastern & South American countries 😮‍💨😮‍💨

We should absolutely sell Super Sukhoi based Su-30MKI to Armenia! They are our allies, and Akash NG, with BrahMos and Su-30MKI, would be a huge game-changer for Armenia.

This is sure then , we have tooling and needed material to make Su30 MKI upto 60% , minus the engine and some parts since long . So it's good that we can make more airframes as Russia seems now has military hardware output 3 times that of entire NATO combined as NATOs own admission , so we will get the engines, as needed which must in plenty with Russians as it's own Aviation is now Su35 .so Armenia will get Hit tech MKI to knock out Azerbaijan.

If Geopolitical matters can be said here , one must know that oil fields of Azerbaijan are with UAE consortium , its a sworn enemy of Iran like Iraq, religious groups apart, so Israel is in backyard of Iran via Azerbaijan, they speak three Dilacts, Turkic. Dari and Russian and so identification is with Turk culture . They are morden Islamic people, not aligned with any psyco fanatics ,good but Pakistan flaunts Islam brotherhood so due Turkish influence, they go along . Erdogan is relic causing many wars to remain ignited , from Russia Ukraine,to syria , to Iraq to Pakistan India conflict . Turkey must be taught a lesson and all this ho haa will die. Hit it, if there is will and rest will fall in line .Erdogan is Ottoman Empire type maniac so we have itch .

India needs to do whatever it can to increase their military strength and sell them more advanced weapons and technology that will give them an advantage. We should upgrade their Sukhoi jets to the Super Sukhoi standard as it will definitely enhance the jets fighting capability. On top of that we can sell them our entire set of indigenous weapons like the BVR Astra MK1-3 and Rudram MK1-3, PGM, LGM, glide bombs etc.

Armenia also needs more jets of at least half a squadron of Sukhoi jets and half a squadron of a light fighter. The country is very small and using a Sukhoi jet all of the time is more expensive than using a lighter jet which still has the same technology and weapons package.

India definitely needs to ensure that Armenia survives as it’s strategically important to us. The north south transport corridor is a major, cheap and quicker trade route by using a road and rail network directly to Russia and Eastern European countries. This will start from our Chabahar port in Iran via Armenia and finally to Russia which will now allow us to export more goods. This is also a major trade route to Central Asia which can be connected to the north south transport corridor and there is a lot of interest from neighbouring countries who would also like to use it.

It’s no mistake that Pakistan and Türkiye support Azerbaijan to bolster its military and there was a recent major skirmish involving the loss of territory to Azerbaijan. It’s all geo strategically linked and important and no mistake that they beat Armenia with advanced NATO weapons from Türkiye and cheap military imports from Pakistan. If they defeat Armenia then we can forget about using the NSTC as they will ban us from using it permanently.
