IAF's Upcoming Loyal Wingman, HAL CATS Warrior...

The HAL CATS Warrior is an Indian-developed, low-observable unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) designed to act as a "loyal wingman" to a manned fighter aircraft. It is a key component of the larger Combat Air Teaming System (CATS) program by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and an Indian private startup, NewSpace Research & Technologies.

Key Features and Purpose

  • Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T): The primary concept is for a single pilot in a "mothership" aircraft (such as the HAL Tejas or Su-30MKI) to command and control multiple Warrior drones from a safe distance.
  • Role: The drone is designed to perform high-risk missions, including intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), absorbing enemy fire, and conducting precision strikes, thus reducing the risk to human pilots and expensive manned aircraft.
  • Stealth Capabilities: The UCAV features a composite structure and specific design elements (like a serpentine air intake) to reduce its radar cross-section, making it difficult for enemy air defence systems to detect.
  • Armament: It has an internal weapon bay to maintain stealth and can carry two Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAAW) or Next-Generation Close Combat Missiles (NG-CCM). It also has external hardpoints for additional weapons or air-to-air missiles.
  • Autonomy: Equipped with advanced AI and an indigenous mission computer, the Warrior can operate autonomously and make mission-critical decisions, all while remaining under the overarching control of the mothership aircraft.
  • Kamikaze Capability: In high-risk scenarios, it can be directed to perform a one-way, "suicide" mission by crashing into high-value enemy targets.

Development Status

A full-scale demonstrator prototype was displayed at Aero India 2025, following a successful engine ground run in January 2025. The first flight is currently scheduled by the end of 2025, with full integration into the combat air teaming system expected in the next few years.

Should do if 1 plane can direct 2 onto enemy plus engage multiple targets itself in few minutes, this means some 8 to 10 targets can be hit hard and fast plus UCAV itself may go and hit 2 more ,if paired with Su30 MKI, this is major force multipliers type matter .can make a lot of difference in high speed battlefield dominance as speed now is the key to all warfare , anyone who is slow , deliberate and calculative like Russians in Ukraine, doing what was done in Afghanistan and before that in WW2 , now face failure all over despite victories at huge and massive cost . We must be very fast to dominate major land and sea areas across borders.

War is all about loss ,no gain is permanent in war as history as shown that battles die out , battlefields don't as Russia is back in Ukraine after 80 years of WW2 and same Germany and engages it via proxy Ukrainians as it did even WW2.so do we wish create such lasting battlefields or sanitize large areas of deadly enemy missiles and air assets , as occupying land is utopian and not possible scenario now ,not possible . So land incursions is a no go all over world but air dominance is possible.we must pay attention to this fact.

In Israel, there is skepticism about this concept: artificial intelligence does not need human care; this only hinders the achievement of its goals. Regards...

AI can be used to hunt targets of oppertunity, who says AI is not in use in Israel, right now in gaza as per human rights sources and news is hunter autonomous drones , hunting human targets using AI in conflict zone. Israel is a ruthless presure, so pls do check facts .
