In a major strategic development, the defence ministry yesterday released a major modernization & capabilities upgrade plan, termed as 'The Technology Vision and Capability Roadmap’ for the Indian armed forces through 2040, in a document released yesterday and reported by most key media outlets within & outside India.
Coming in the wake of Operation Sindoor months ago and China's VE Day parade, held just a couple of days ago, It focuses on the twin core objectives & linchpins of integration of cutting edge indigenous technologies in defence systems and indigenous development & sourcing of these technologies, backed by public-private partnership as it's underlying credo and bedrock.
Key highlights & tenets of the roadmap and capability upgrade plan include:-
- Development of a third Aircraft Carrier for the Indian Navy which likely will be nuclear powered.
- The development of new electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) for the aircraft carrier, like the U.S. Navy, for future to replace existing steam catapult launch systems
- Development of 10 nuclear propulsion systems for carrier and other warships.
- 10 new destroyers, corvettes, landing platforms, helicopters & torpedos to be produced & procured for the Navy.
- Procurement of domestically produced fighter jets for the Navy's existing Aircraft Carriers, including, the TEDBF and light jets built by HAL.
- Major focus on drones in the wake of their proven effectiveness, as almost gamechanger, as demonstrated in Operation Sindoor and in Ukraine.
- 590 hypersonic missiles for the Armed forces and directed energy systems.
- Procurement of 1800 tanks for the Army to replace existing T-72s besides 400 light tanks and 600,000 artillery rounds for the Army, in addition, to 50,000 Anti Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) & loitering munitions.
- 20 stratospheric airships, 350 multi-mission drones, stealth UCAVs, high-power laser systems, and directed-energy weapons to be procured for the Indian Air Force.
- India hopes to have 62 Rafale jets in service by 2030, including the 26 marine variants ordered for the Indian Navy's 2 aircraft carriers.
- The MOD has allocated ₹6.81 trillion/$77 billion towards defense this fiscal year.
