Russia Delivers Material Kits to HAL Nashik for Production of 12 Su-30MKI Jets with Over 62% Indigenous Content

In a major step to reinforce the combat readiness of the Indian Air Force (IAF), Russia has successfully delivered a dozen new material kits to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

These essential components will be utilised at HAL’s Nashik facility to manufacture 12 additional Su-30MKI fighter jets.

The production stems from a ₹13,500 crore contract formalised between HAL and the Ministry of Defence on December 12, 2024.

With the arrival of these foundational kits, HAL is on track to assemble and deliver the completed aircraft to the IAF by the end of the year, providing immediate reinforcement amidst a critical shortage of fighter squadrons.

Notably, these new aircraft will serve as vital attrition replacements for jets lost in accidents over the past decade.

The Backbone of India's Air Power

The Su-30MKI continues to function as the primary anchor of India’s aerial dominance strategy.

The IAF currently maintains a robust fleet of approximately 270 of these heavy air superiority fighters.

They are projected to remain the central pillar of the nation's air power until the planned procurement of 114 new multi-role fighter aircraft is fully realised.

At present, the IAF operates just two squadrons of Rafale jets, making the timely delivery of these 12 Su-30MKIs essential for sustaining necessary force levels and operational tempo.

Push for Defence Self-Reliance

Demonstrating the nation's growing commitment to domestic manufacturing, this new batch of fighters will feature an impressive 62.6 percent indigenous content.

HAL's Nashik division, which holds decades of experience in the licensed production of the Su-30MKI, will integrate the newly arrived Russian material kits with a wide array of locally sourced systems.

This approach not only strengthens the domestic defence industry but also significantly increases the value added by Indian supply chains.

Bridging the Acquisition Gap

The induction of these 12 jets offers a practical, near-term remedy to ongoing procurement hurdles.

The IAF has faced operational challenges due to production delays in the indigenous Tejas Mk1A program, which has been hampered by international engine supply constraints and complex certification timelines.

By bringing these new Su-30MKIs online, the military can effectively bridge the immediate gap in squadron strength and ensure uninterrupted combat preparedness.

Continuous Fleet Upgrades

Beyond merely increasing aircraft numbers, the new Su-30MKI airframes will feature advanced capabilities that align with the IAF's long-term modernization goals.

The broader fleet is gradually evolving toward the highly anticipated "Super Sukhoi" standard.

Key expected features for these new and upgraded platforms include:
  • Enhanced Weaponry: Full integration with the indigenous Astra beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile and the heavy-duty BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.
  • Modern Avionics: Advanced digital cockpit systems and mission computers designed by Indian industries to reduce import dependency.
  • Superior Surveillance: Compatibility with next-generation Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar systems for superior target tracking and situational awareness.
  • Survivability: State-of-the-art electronic warfare suites to provide robust protection against modern radar and missile threats.

We had 272 jets, lost 13 due to crashes (recent in NE)
Currently number is 259, these 12 will rise it again to 271.
Best to order one dozen jet more...as a reinforcement/backup.

Upgrade plan should be finalized. The new jets should be built according to their specs.

Thank to article writer and deepest respect for putting reality and truthful that Su-30 KIT/IKEA Flat pack delivery so HAL can assemble it locally and call it MADE-In-INDA!!
i know 90% of Indian tax payers are brainwashed by national media and these so called experts and forums full of AI images and videos.
Please spread reality and dispel this fog of Ministry of Defence crime using Mil-Industrial complex.

** article author request:
Please label AI image and video as non-Indian so tax payers are duly informed of reality. It sets expectation right and avoid frustration in future.
Calling ToT as Flat Pack delivery, calling our PLAN/DREAM/IDEA as such instead of serving it as something being tested and demo stage.

You are probably correct but it all costs money. Everyone has their hand out for expensive foreign systems. Can't blame them. We should have by now replaced them with indigenous systems. Empower private companies. Its the only way to catch up..

60% local content even after 25yrs of su30 production unacceptable. Hal when build own?
they never did in their entire history since 1950s. i pasted history, products and year with number of products.
Some forum users got angry with facts and stats that turned on me!!
Please do some fact checking and digging on info. otherwise look in my comments history for full list!

Russia will not let you replace certain components, like the engine and other systems. Its in the contract. Nothing to do with localization.

Poor tax payers fed wrong info and propaganda by Ministry of Defence and these PSUSs etc.
They literally believe it that "Transfer of Technology" happened! but in reality its contract to transfer product as IKEA Flat pack style delivery for local assembly only!

Their expectation are wrongly inflated with false news and these media bits and Jan 26 parades with brain high on nationalism coolade. Their false perception crumbles when LCA happens or Arjun tank or Insas or Ghatak UAV or 4 ton max GTO payload capacity and failed launches 2025 was disaster hard slap of reality!
Media hides it. with these AI Image and videos or videos of other countries. creating false perception among our Indian tax payers.

Reality hits hard when see run down shed storage of LCA assembled planes and moved around by Agricultural tractor!!! i forgot to download and archieve those pictures, gems of HAL U$2 billion a year giant!!
Same like PATAKA helmat(metal sheet wraped in fabric for make do helmat) even in Apr 2026!
