HSL completes EKM submarine refit gears up for MRLC-1.webp

Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) today said it has successfully completed the normal refit of an EKM-class submarine, four-days back, setting a benchmark in quality and turnaround time. The Indian Navy lauded HSL for the fastest-ever completion of such a complex refit, significantly enhancing the vessel’s combat readiness, the Shipyard in a release here.

HSL Chairman and Managing Director Cmde Hemant Khatri, emphasized that this success reflects HSL’s unmatched capabilities—built over three decades of submarine refit experience, the dedicated efforts of HSL employees, and the invaluable support from Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam and the Eastern Naval Command. He further highlighted that the development of a strong MSME vendor base during the refit has fostered local economic growth, job creation, and skill development, aligning with India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

The refit involved extensive work, he said that one of the most remarkable accomplishments was the modification and testing of both escape hatches for DSRV integration—a first-ever feat for any conventional submarine refitted by an Indian shipyard. Building on this success, HSL is now gearing up for the refit of a Scorpene-class submarine, showcasing its ability to handle modern, high-end platforms. This track record makes HSL a frontrunner for upcoming strategic programmes such as the Medium Refit-cum-Life Certification (MRLC) of the Sindhughosh class and submarine construction under Projects P75(I) and P76.

A recent MoU with MDL marks a strategic alliance to create dual submarine construction capabilities across India’s east and west coasts—crucial for fleet readiness and faster project delivery. This collaboration strengthens India’s position as a capable, self-reliant submarine-building nation under the Make in India vision.

HSL is also in discussions with the Vietnam People’s Navy for global submarine refits, positioning India as a defence partner in the Indo-Pacific. As India strengthens its defence manufacturing capabilities, HSL emerges as a key enabler— delivering cutting-edge submarine solutions with speed, scale, and self-reliance. HSL is poised for highly complex refits and new submarine construction in the year ahead, the release added.
